went out today and marder got a bit noisy then complete loss of drive, the plastic drive gear is completely stripped (see pic)

i don't understand why this has happened, i have got the cover over the gears to stop stones etc getting in plus it was only on 3rd tank of fuel,

anyway has anyone got a metal one for sale or know where the best place to get one from is? plus can you just change that 1 gear to metal?

its 46 tooth and fg part number is 06427

thanks

There is an arguement that the cover can let stones in but does not let them out as Im sure you will hear in the forthcoming comments. I have 1 fitted to 1 of mine and it has been ok but I run mainly on grass so totally different terrain to you by the sounds of it. Just stick another plastic 1 on cos you are selling it so don't waste money on steel but next time you take it out take the cover off if you are running on gravel!!

im just running on grass, its a school playing field,

decided not to sell now,

so should i run steel gear with no cover?

+1 Dwarfy comments.
I've got a cover but have never fitted it for that reason - risk of stone getting in, which cannot get out again.

Gears?
Some get away with plastic.
If your pinion is alloy, then another plastic Spur should be OK. If it's steel, then I'd go all metal.
New from Hobbythek, else plenty on Ebay.
Check your shafts before considering any of the Blackbone (?) gears.
Don't get me wrong, they appear excellent quality, but some gears have opposing flats, to just require an E-Clip or Screw to keep in place instead of the grub screws, others at 90 degrees.

How's the engine mounted - alloy mounts or plastic.
Many have problems with the plastic flexing and causing just this kind of wear.

Whatever you do, make sure you line up your motor properly before starting again.

hi buddy, it might just be down to wear , how muich use has the spur had? i used to use plastic and never had a problem, i have a gear cover but never use it either, its a xtm one, they have a opening at the rear to let stones etc out..
1 thing, just check the bearing at the top of your large engine mount,if that goes there could be play making it move and strip the teeth..
are you using the plastic pinion.? if so pm me your details,i have loads of 46's as i don't use them this big anymore. il send you one.

Thanks buddy, the car has only done 3 tanks of fuel, is it worth getting alloy engine mounts?

I have alloy mounts on mine and I run ateel pinion with plastic spur(my weak point) and so far I have had about 1 1/2 gallons through it without any damage to the spur...oh no cover..

As a few of the guys on here will tell you I am not very gentle on my cars...lol

drive them as they should be driven....flat out..lol

I had this problem on a few of my marders.
I cured it with an alloy gear carrier. The fault on mine was the carrier was worn and the bearings produces heat thus sending it through the drive train and hating the spur up tilll its too plyable..
It is a FG carrier isn't it? If its a Carson then the gears will never match and they will mesh too tight or too loose.
Carson gears work off odd teeth and FG work off even amounts,if you have an FG spur and a Carson pinion there will be a mi-match and cause the problem too.

the car is all fg, it came brand new from the shop how it is now.

i cant see it being due to wear as its only had 3 tanks of fuel.

the 3rd tank was when i really opened it up and the noise started.

i might cut the back part of my cover off to let stones out should they somehow get in there.

im going to get a small alloy engine mount as advised by hyper78

It was probably a stone got trapped in there but just give it the once over & make sure all nuts & bolts are still tight as they can shake loose on the first couple of runs. This will at least eliminate any slack in the components causing unnecessary heat.

Take the cover off rather than cutting then you can sell it on ebay if you decide you don't need it anymore.
