Wife got me a FG MT for my b-day, advice on what I need to do prior to running. Should I get some gear cover?.... how bout a bumper?.....

The suspension seems a little stiff and when I push the truck down, the body hits the tires before bottoming out. Should I trim the body a little more.

Also, I read somewhere that people are taking the rear anti sway bar out. Is that a common practice.

Thanks in advance. I can't wait to run this beast, I hope it's as much fun as my Baja 5b.

your wife is awsome!! anyway, the body shouldnt rub at all. hopefully you should only have to trim a little off. and don't worry about the gear cover. looks like it would need one, right. nahh. im pretty sure that most people don't bother with them unless they run in the sand or on the beach. you should be fine without a bumper too. not too many aftermarkit ones anyway. you should probly run it with the stabilizer on once, so you can see the diffrence it has. the problem with only running one is that the front end will dip on turns, and not allow the rear to roll. cousing the back, inside tire to lift and lose traction. if you plan on doing some street racing, pick up the front stabilizer bar. as far as the suspension, ya, its stiff. it just needs some tweeking. lighter springs and oil will really help. other then that, just rock the wheels off it and take some good pics!!
save these guys in your faverites too. the most reliable resource for fg parts in the states.

ok , 1st thing to do is take the shocks off and drain the standard shock fluid as its way tooo thick . go and get some 45wt fluid and put it in all 8 shocks [ u will need 2 bottles of shock fluid]

Second that. Just a little work and you should de god to go bashing.
Just make sour you break in the engine, and fit a fail safe unit don’t run without one :nono: trust me on that.

thanks, I'm going to get a fail safe.

does she have a sister.

No, she's the only one. LOL

does the fg monster truck comes as a kit to build.

I was surprised when I opened the giant box. I was expecting a kit and instead this is what I got. I had the whole day set aside for a build.

What servos are you going to buy?
What radio are you getting?
How much do you have for upgrades or do you want to start with the minimum and replace as they go out?
The new Fg's are coming with the metal pinion which is the gear on the bell shaft that comes from the motor, is yours metal?
What motor did it come with?
The gear carrier which is the plastic holder for the large 48 tooth gear will get hot and melt from the heat of the shaft. There is an upgraded aluminum one for that or you can switch the complete set of carrier and gear to alloy and be done with it.
I agree with the shock oil go with under 50wt oil and put the rest in a glass bottle to save for something else.
Get a Red neck filter to go over your stock set up. This will allow you to keep the stock set up cleaner and save the motor in the long run.
The Hummer body is one cool body but they tend to be the weakest of the FG body's, especially when you wheely.
The exhaust is larger then most stock cans but I would tell you that changing it out to a pipe will be a night and day difference.

Wow thats alot to take in...

BTB
the pinon is metal with a zenoah 260.
i'm going to replace parts as they go out. most likely will stay with plastic. this will be a basher.
i've got some 20 wt oil laying around and was wondering if that is too runny.
i will be painting this body tonight and i will try my best to not roll it. LOL.
as far as radio gear, hitec metal steering servo 5475 i think and not sure about the throttle servo. what do you recommend as far as torque?

i say do it once do it right if u can afford a hitec 5995tg servo id buy one for the throttle . i use 2 for my throttle /brakes as im running 4 wheel hydr`s .
id also buy the alloy engine mount large and small ..

Metal engine mounts and gear career. I believe these are a must.

Nice!
I can only say I switched to all metal gears I think 4 years ago with no problems and no gear worries.
Try out the 20wt! I think I have 60 rear 50 front and it still has too much shock!
I think you mean the 5745MG. I have the same servo and have been using it for the 4 years with no problems. Make sure you set the end point to not over steer and the stock servo saver will have enough play to make sure not to over burden that servo. It turns the wheels with no problem.
On the smaller brake and throttle servos I have the HS-5645MG for both but since then I found the Z9100T JR servo thanks to "T" in my Baja and what a monster that is for a single throttle and brake set up.
I had my MT for 2-3 years before I bought the motor mounts. I think since the MT and yours has the bolts on the pull start and the one on the clutch housing there is less chance for the motor to move. I would recommend getting the gears upgraded to alloy or at least the carrier then go for upgrading the diff cage and diff cover. Those diff gears for the FG's are expensive and it will cost about the same to replace them as it would to change out the items that fail and take them out.

Keep the questions coming and congrats! Oh, nice job on the cover!

Hey justafireman, Remember me from HBF!? :P

I see you keep saying 'I'll upgrade what I break'. This is mostly a sound plan, HOWEVER...

... you do need alloy engine mounts, long and short, alloy gear carrier, and alloy rear upper arms. Just get them all at once and get it out of th way. What these parts do, is take the flex out of the rear end, which is why people eat spurs and lose their diffs a lot. It is a preventative action, not a reaction. Seriously, you should get these, BEFORE you break something that wouldn't have broken if you had them.

As for body hitting wheels. yeh, hummer does that. :(

I didn't have the heart to cut the body, which is why I left it as a shelf bod, and as you know, went with the beetle.

I notice you set aside a full day for the build! Not such a bad idea, took me nearly a full day to get the roller actually fully installed. Not difficult, but heavy and time consuming to work on.
