Don't think a viscous differential is supposed to look like this...

How expensive are the carriers? Would it be worth it to put the broken gears back in that carrier and fill it with epoxy, to make it completely locked? If you ever have a need for a locked diff, that is.

Jeese £70 for replacement gears!!!!!

Trip - not sure mate just drive started cutting out on one wheel then failed completely...guess when all the teeth sheared off.

Texas - very expensive unfortunately....hence I'll probably source a new differential instead as I didn't realise how expensive the gears would be...! Have tried a solid axle before and too tail happy for my liking.

yup the diff is now the weak link with a lot of torque from the engine....
I have 2 extra sets of internal gears for my rear diff......I figure you will go thru 2 sets
internal gears to 1 set of pinion & spur gears....The little diff gears are turning 3 times as fast as the bigger gears.......Yes.... FG gear are expensive....Slawhammer

Not trying to second guess you, what you said got me to thinking... The spider gears only spin, if one wheel is spinning faster than the other. Otherwise the spiders just sit there.

Ducky, were you doing some one wheel peels?

Ducky good one! I have never seen a FG diff fail, and you did it. I would be curious to hear what FG had to say about it. How old is the diff?

Join the club Clubin, it's the first time I've seen a diff fail too! the diff itself isn't that old really...but I'm thinking a combination of the monster tyres and wheel speed probably broke one tooth off and then took the rest out once the play was there.

Trip, I've had the wheel spin up when turning on dirt sometimes...guess it was going to happen eventually under the right conditions...off the road again while I sort something out. pants!

When I took out my FG diff it was due to one tooth tearing off and going in and out adding up more broken teeth. I chock it up to a weak gear breaking due to weak or cracked metal.
Are you using ball drives? If not, are the gears the same as the stock FG diff gears. If they are you could probably replace all the gears and the out drives with Duratrax and be done in less $$. Just a thought.

I am using ball drives but the outer spline drives are slightly different as they hold the viscous plates, but interesting though on the other gears though as I think they are normal. I'm currently bidding (fleabay) on another LSD so if I get that cheap enough I won't bother repairing the viscous for now.

:)

Yes, that is a lot of money to repair it. I have never ran a LSD, I bought a 4 plate lsd as soon as it dries up I will give it a try.

I recently installed an aluminum rear diff and used OFNA 500k lube. This stuff is THICK! Seems to be working fine so far. Very limited slip but keeps the gears well lubed. Anyone else try that? What lube did you have in there when it blew up??

ducky..the more I think about it ..you ran out of lube...causing 1 wheel to spin...
lost a tooth ..the the rest followed......I don't have limited slip diff...
but have a FG8484 case...I used duratrac internals and diff cups..cheaper to use...
Fill full of wheel bearing gearse..as much as it will hold....It spins both rear wheels...
I could use FG internals and ball drive system......Forme I figue the rear diff is the waek
link in the drive train....So I went the less expensive route...Internal gears & cups are Like $55 USD..........Slawhammer

There was lots of oil in there, I had to drain it before I took it apart :D I usually check the diff on every stripdown to make sure it's got plenty of oil. :)

Think I was running 8000wt in it, as you can change the locking effect by using different weight oils.

Yes... I know about the locking effect with different oils....I just did not want to mess
with any oils...shocks are bad enough.....Slawhammer

I was told the fg square brace that holds the diff and engen mounts twist from the torqe cause i have had spider gears get eaten up in the past, and i have stainless steal houseing. it seaams to have workes so far sinse i have replaced with aluminium. I think thers a set of engein mounts on ebay now50 dollers buy now.
