Because a machine shop should have all top of the line tools to do small tolerance work and if the don't have the good quality tools then I wouldn't allow them to work on my projects. Whether full scale or hobby you want your machinist to be top notch. They can either make or break your project.

That's also why you never rush them.

when you are only talking roughly .002 inch difference in piston size is what they claim? This could either work and run fine or seize the first time out from being too tight. Better to be safe on this. A lot of work you have put into this to just skip something like that.
 
Ok since I'm EXTREMELY paranoid, I'm Gunna ask Athena to re measure both the pistons just to be sure. I DO NOT want to take ANY chances with this build, and I hate that unsure feeling. Even tho the machine shop measured it for me, I want Athena's word on it.
