Hey guys,

When starting my car, I'm used to pull slow until the pawl engages and only then pull hard. Until a few days ago, this engagement point was usually at around 1ft. All of a sudden, it jumped to at least 2ft. This obviously leaves me less distance for the fast pull, making it more difficult to start the engine. Any idea what could cause this?

Yes, I have outerwear. I'll take it out and look at it. I was hoping it was a common problem with a known solution.

I'll take it out and let you guys know. If it is indeed worn out (altough it seems kinda soon, especially since I don't abuse it), is there a fix for it or is a new pull start the only way? And if so, is there a metal version, to avoid having this happen again?

A clean pawl will start spinning right away while a dirty one can take longer.

I only use metal pawls and keep the plastic ones as temporary replacement for when the metal one fails.

DDM metal pawl

I run in sand most of the time and that is a common problem... Wash it out and give it a shot of lube and she will work fine. After every session I do this as part of my after run maintenance. If you run street you may not have to do it as often.

I had this problem. The next time I ran, my pull start broke. I went with a drill start from that point forward and never looked back. The drill start was one of my favorite upgrades.

Which one are you using?
