Pull start pre filters do they work?

hi guys i was looking at a pull start pre filter to stop grass from collecting around the cylinder head of my engine as it seems to get sucked up by the motor when running??!!? do they work are they worth the money?

is there a simpler or cheaper solution?

Also do the mesh mod on the bottom of engine....there is a thread on here somewhere of how to do it.

I will have a quick look for ya.
 
as others have said, the pullstart cover is a MUST if you run in muddy/dusty conditions, nothing worse than going somewhere only for your pullstart to jam after 5mins run! my 1st pull start packed in not long after i got my MB, i bought an outerwears pullstart cover, never had a prob since (almost 2 years on) :)
 
Gotta say that pull pullstart cover and cover for crankcase openings are very important. I could even say manufacturers should add covers even on basic models. Without covers on crankcase just one rock on flywheel makes hellowa mess. and grass inside cylinder covers are risk of even fire. Still these covers are pretty pricy so I made my own. Pullstartcover with glue and old loudspeeker mesh and for crankcase with metall mesh and chemical metal.
 
only 5 screws to take the engine out (4 on bottom, 1 on the diff stiffener plate [directly below the throttle linkage on the carb]). dead easy. but yeah, wait till you have to whip it out anyway, like for a major clean.
 
hmm, ive heard mixed comments about the mesh mod, i was gunna do it myself but not gunna bother (guess it depends what type of surface ur running on) ...but to what ive heard, putting the mesh mod on can limit the air flow & at worse bits getting stuck in the fins etc.

I know alot have done this mod & had no problems, but it be my luck i do the mod & my engine explodes! lol ... but to now ive had no probs not using the mod, so think im gunna leave it.... but i am gunna do a mesh mod on my side rails for my MB Pro :D
 
the only problem with the crankcase mesh mod (not the pullstart one) is that grass can accumulate under the engine which you can't see, but must remember to clean out with a hex key or hook.

However I reckon it's better to end up under the engine and leave some airflow at the front and rear than get the fan cover full of grass, and turn the head into a hay bale with no airflow.

i kept loosing fins off my flywheel at deeside one week i lost 1 a few weeks later i checked and there were 3 missing, so fitted a new fywheel and done the mesh mod , i ain,t had any problems since with fins missing.
 
guess i might do mine then as originally planned! ...someone said motorworld for the mesh, but nearest one to me is fkin wrexham, bowt 30mile away! :(
