OK I have read every engine sticky on every forum and exhausted every checklist within the scope of my knowledge. Now it's time to ask for help.

I got this Baja 5b used a week ago and I have been trying to start it ever since. Day one I got it to idle for about 10 seconds and it died. Here is what I have done so far:

  • New spark plug gapped to .020
  • Brand new fuel and oil
  • Deflooded the engine and left open overnight
  • made sure it is getting spark
  • Squirted a tiny bit of fuel directly in the cylinder and tried to start it
  • Tested the stock kill switch and it works fine
  • Check carb, air filter, and exhaust for tightness

Now a couple questions-

The top of the piston looks pretty cruddy and I got a bit of gunk off it by reaching the the spark plug hole with a wooden swab end and doing a ight scrape. Should I pull the cylinder head and clean the piston? If so with what? WD40? Carb cleaner?

When I was deflooding the engine, very, very little fuel came out. Even when I choked the motor with the plug out, purposely trying to get fuel to show and then deflooded it, almost nothing came out.

I traded my beloved Ofna Ultra GTP for this and $300 understanding that it ony has about 7 or 8 tanks through it. I really want to get this thing running. Can any of you gurus make suggestions?

Have you checked the needle settings on your carb? Also have you pulled the carb off of the engine and cleaned the carb with carb cleaner? Just tossing out a couple of ideas. I know I've had starting problems and come to find out dirt had gotten down inside the carb and kept it from getting fuel.

Sounds like to me
New ring
Clean carb(strip)
Make sure the fuel lines are on the right way round,I put them on backwards and this happened to me.From the clunk to the bottom of the carb. From the return(top of carb) to the tank.
It does sound like it needs a ring.
Check the gap on the coil,it might have slipped.

Voo, what is the compression like? and check the gaskets on the carb.

Reason I say this is due to very recent experience with Martins 26cy. He will be down Deeside today. we spent a lot of time trying to start his old engine, changing rings etc.but could not get a good enough compression. He then put a second hand 26 in that he bought of ebay, the gasket from the carb tothe engine was a bit chewed and we did get it running like you for about 10 seconds. Stripped it down again and changed the gasket......running sweet now.

I had a hard time starting mine after the gas went bad. With new fuel, it would run erratically and then stop, and then it wouln't start. I found out that the fuel inlet was partially clogged. Make sure the fuel line is not pinched, and pull the carb out, and take it appart. Remove the fuel line from the carb and shove the carb cleaner straw into the carb fuel inlet (fits perfectly), spray the carb cleaner until it gushes out the other end. Remove the plug and pull the cord a few times to remove any excess gas in the cylinder.

Sorry I didn't update, as I solved this on another forum. It turns out it was just flooded. To solve it I had to clear the chamber, close both needles all the way and give it a couple pulls until it fired, the set the needles to factory again and she fired right up!

Thank you guys for the feedback.
