I am looking to get some more RAM for our computer. It is a Gateway GT5404 with an Intel 945G chipset. It has 2 RAM slots and Gateway's site says a max of 2 MB of RAM.

What happens if I put (2) 2 GB sticks in? Is all PC4200, 533 mhz, 240 pin RAM the same?

find out first what type of RAM is in your system, ie DDR or DDR 2. easiest way take out your existing RAM and take it to your pc shop ;)

if it says your system (motherboard) will only take max of 2GB then it'll be useless if put 2 x 2GB in (4GB) as only 2GB will be recognised by the motherboard

Most motherboards that cater DDR2 RAMs usually have max limit of 4GB altogether (some newer ones go up to 8GB)

It depends as well on what OS you run. Windows XP can only recognise around 3GB even you put 4GB of RAM altogether in your system (this is the case on my 2 machines at home :p )

Your Gateway GT5404 processor is Pentium D dual core 2.8ghz each.

Yeah slap 2 x 2GB sticks and you'll give your PC extra 'lungs' to breathe

I have Vista Home Premium. How much can it recognise? Will anything be damaged if I put more in that the OS / mother board can recognise?

only thing that recognizes more is a 64 bit os. that said, if you have any on board stuff that uses ram it will help even if the os doesn't use it. the on board stuff needing the ram loads first in the bios anyway
