Ok, I'm planning on putting a new ring in my engine (HPI fuelie - CY 26).
Its had about 15 litres thru it and still performs well but im doing a big strip / clean / maintenance , and have a new ring ready.
I've not been inside one of these engines before, so....... any advice would be great! Stuff to do , or not to do !! Things to watch out for, advice on fitting the ring ????:scared:

Also after it is fitted, do I need to take it easy on the engine for a bit ??
Kinda like another break in ???:hammer:

Thanks in advance y'all !!!!!!!

A rering is fairly straight forward....undo the two head bolts and gently lift off the head (with the coil still attached so you don't have to regap it)

Using your thumbnails...pry the ring ends apart just enough to slip the ring off........and the same to put the new one on.

Make sure the new gasket is the same thickness as the existing one..(or the piston could hit the head and fook it up good)..

Compress the ring with 3 or 4 fingers and slip the cylinder back on..

Do the head bolts up tight and evenly....and again after the first 10 mins of running....then after another 20 mins...

I only run in a new cylinder for heat cycling purposes but never bother running in rerings.....

In my opinion there is no need to.....coz to bed in a ring it has to wear...and what better way to wear a ring than to run the arse off it!!!

clean the motor outside THUROUGHLY before you open it up. i get my motor as clean as i can before cracking it open.

i also setup a work area i attempt to keep spotless while working on the motors.

check the cylinder walls for dull grey areas. if you see alot of it, get a new topend. (i recommend a Zen 26 topend). but if the cylinder walls are all clean and shiney, then the plating is ok.

i do recommend new crank bearings. the CYs are ok, but do tend to fail around 5 gallons in. for 20.00 UDS, you can get a set of TFE SS crank bearings and new oil seals for the bottom end. 9.00 for a full gasket kit.

Think i'll be doing a re-ring too pete, can't get the hpi to start. Not sure if its the carb or ring, got a 668 carb on the way (813 is doing my head in) so i'll try that first. :badair:

Ian ,is there compression there?

Its got some, not sure how much it should be.
Also don't know when it was last re-ringed due to it being second hand so might just do it anyway, hoping to get the 668 off ebay in the next couple of days so i'll try that first. :)

What size is your motor?

If you are going to re-ring your motor then you should do a complete tear down. This will get you a fresh start without another part needing replacement before the next re-ring.

I would recommend exactly what T says above. Get it spotless. Use some brake cleaner. One can will be enough two is better - And cheap.
Remove the head and inspect it like T says. If you need to replace it you can buy it with your rebuild parts.

Make sure you get ALL your gaskets.
Ring.
oil seals.
Crank bearings.
Piston pin bearing and new clips.
You may want to upgrade to a alloy insulator while your doing the rebuild.

Make sure you have all the tools needed.
Torque wrench. Torque specs HERE.
Piston Stopper. Can make your own found HERE.
Flywheel puller. Can make your own found HERE.

Here is a bit of help too - http://www.bajaplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1273

Had the whole thing in bits , ready to fit new ring........
Only to find the ring on my piston is a 0.7mm and the one I was sold as a replacement is a 1mm.... and won't fit !!!!! ARRRRRGH !!:cursing::mad::cursing::stick::crying::huh::eek:

So... its all gone back together again !!

I think the guy who sold it to me is going to swap it for a 0.7mm

Score me one wasted evening !!!!

Thats what I use,I think its a 0.7mm.
J.

Yeh after a quick root round on tinterweb thats what I discovered !!
So the 1mm one is going back, hopefully to be replaced by a 0.7mm.

The guy was pretty good about it considering I bought it in november last year !!!
