Please excuse the total noob question, but how the heck do I work out what receiver battery pack and charger I need for my FG Marder?

This is probably compounded by not as yet have a receiver for the car (this will be a question at a later date?

What transmitter are you using?.
You'll need to get the receiver compatible with that transmitter.
I use a flysky gt5 + receiver + Lipo battery pack.
I like my gt5, it's cost and functionality make it a good starting,low cost option. You can control up to 10 different vehicles with it.
If you go gt5 get a Lipo for it, because the transmitter uses battery power when off and will kill your regular battery unless you take them out between uses.
Then you'll need a charger, im using a HTRC C240 Duo,again affordable + gets the job done.
You can pick whichever charger you want. I'd advise at least 2 charging ports- so you can charge 2 batteries at a time.
There's many chargers + transmitter/recievers you can use but for low entry cost + expandability that's what I use now.
What servos are you running?. That will determine which battery pack you need. Stock uses a 6v-nimh 5 cell flat pack battery. This will match the 6v servos. If you want to go beyond that,lmk.

Thanks for this, but how do I charge it, are all 5 cell 6v battery packs the same?

Thanks for all this, don't yet have a transmitter or receiver, was going to go Flysky, but since I last had an rc nitro car 20+ years ago, things seem to have moved on and this looks like yet another mine field I've yet to navigate as they don't seem to use crystals any more!!

Get the flysky gt5,it will come with 1 receiver. So that's covered. You can use any nimh 5 cell 6v flat battery pack, say 3000mah +/- or so.
Then you'll need a charger,tons of chargers. Here's an example:

(This battery is just to show what type you need,you might be able to fit a hump pack in somewhere as there more plentyfull and have larger capacities. I only looked on Amazon.uk.)

I don't know your hobby shop so, see if you can get them all from one place to make it easier.

Maybe evvs or Doug⭐ or any other uk'er can help tell you where the best place to purchase these items or bigger battery pack.
