So I'm coming back to larger scale stuff and am looking for opinions.

I'm looking for a touring car. I have an x4 I've had for quite a while and it's fine but it's also a pain. Parts are available but there's only 1 set of wheels and tires that fit, only one body that fits, etc. now that we are in excess of 10 years down the road and split between getting it going again or hanging on and picking up an fg sports line or something this summer.

It's been a long time since I've had my hands on an FG. I assume they are still decent quality? I'll probably get an AWD model but I haven't decided. How are these holding up? The belt drive concerns me a little.

If I keep the x4 is there ANYTHING available for it aftermarket, especially in the wheels and tires. The factory wheels are extremely soft and deform and the tires are not really that spectacular. They don't grip particularly well and they don't last at all.

Welcome back, tbh I had a new fg 530 sports line and it wasn't impressive with quality. If you can afford it get an mcd
The duox is way out of my price range for this. The xr5 I'm worried will have the same problem as the x4.

It's a shame about the FG.

You shouldn’t worry about the xr5 having part finding issues. 2 of the major players in 5th scale carry their parts, cardinal racing and taylor rc. The xr5 is way more popular the the x4 ever was. I wouldn’t touch an fg touring car with a 10 foot stick.
So there are non mcd parts available for them like wheels, tires, bodies?

I run with @crucialRC and just seeing and driving his mcd makes me want one and never look at another fg car ever.

@XJman you gotta pick your battles man, wheels tires is a locked deal. What do you plan on running as far as bodies? These are kinda set in stone things your asking for aftermarket on. Same goes for fg. Your stuck with square hex tires and their all glued.

Right, yet there are multiple companies that sell them. There are also different compounds. My X4 was stuck with one set of wheels that were awful and tires that were meh. I'm not saying I don't like MCD's quality however being stuck with a very specific setup for wheels and tires sucks. So if I wanted to run on blazing hot tarmac or a parking lot mid winter, or my driveway after it rained there was only 1 option. I also had consistent problems with the wheels being so flexible they would rub the steering components.

Bodies are a thing for me, I've got multiple bodies for almost all of my smaller scale stuff.

I think I'm just going to rebuild the X4 and call it a day. Everything is still available for it and the xr5 doesn't really offer anything new I'd benefit from. Thanks for the replies everyone, this seems to be the last bastion for any information on anything that isn't an arrma kraton.

Fg sportsline or MCD xr5 would be my pick. Love my MCDs
Thanks.

I think I'm going to work with the x4 for a while. I've got it apart and am getting it all cleaned up and greased up. I'm going to contemplate if I want to go with the xr5 max or maybe even go for a duox. That'll be spring time planning though.

It's a shame FG has gone down hill. I really liked the ones I had in the early 2000s.

Hi,

What is going on with the FG Sportsline 530 gas cars? There isn’t even a thread dedicated to them.

And I don’t see many of them in the web stores.

Thanks.

I had one last year to race and I did make a thread about it. All was positive until I started driving it, then that stopped because they aren't that great. Driving out front of my house just learning the car screws and bolts would just back out and get lost, any performance and upgrade parts are not usually stocked in the US and have to come from overseas. The "premium" exhausts for sale for them are a pain to install and lack any proper instructions to install as well as require a but of modification of the car itself to fit. Now on a track setting if your not decent at controlling the car you'll blow it into a hundred pieces as their very fragile. They like to throw dogbones if you hit something and take a bit of finesse and skill to drive if you want to be competitive, if you want to bash with it that's fine and it will probably last a bit longer. It's alot of setup and tuning out of the box so their not rtr, my 530 first drive had to be adjusted for ride height because it would drag the ground when turning or hitting the brakes. That's another thing, figuring out how to tune the brakes so they apply evenly without one side locking up. I sold it before I even raced it because I wasn't impressed, also the ones that stay in the race are ones of people that found a setup they like and never messed with it again and their some of the dirtiest cars we have running on the track.

XR5 short wheelbase can fit the 911 bodies (with some mods I believe) and also the old school Renault Turbo rally body. The max long wheel base can fit the Fiat Tipo, Toyota Yaris (XT5) and they’ll release an Audi R8 body for the XS5 soon.

In regards to tires, for on road, I haven’t seen much, but I’ve seen people use adaptors on off road to fit different wheels. I switch between the medium on roads and the hard compound rally tires, and I’m pretty happy with the options, but I agree that it’s limited. There’s also the astro turf wheels with the spikes that will fit the XR5/XS5.

Check out “bobby bucks” on FB, I saw he had a Duox for sale with an engine for like $2300 or something pretty reasonable. Maybe it’s sold by now.

If you’re not racing then even the XR5 competition should be super durable.

Does the fact that you can convert it to a W5 or RR5 sound appealing to you? As that was one of the main reasons I got a MCD. Nice to know I can use the same car in different applications. It’s expensive, but it’s not a one trick pony.
