Hey guys.. somehow my ring gear has separated from the pinion (or vice-versa). Nothing appears to be loose. Check out the pics below. Is it possible the teeth wore that much?

Mine did the same thing...well not complete separation. It was the screws on the large motor mount that tighten from under the car. I am either going to try a lock washer on those screws or super glue on the threads. The correct fix would be a large alloy mount but it is only available from hobbythek in Germany. 40 bucks just for shipping I hear.

hint... fold a piece of typing paper in half then in half again

slide the folded paper inbetween the layshaft pinion and the diff drive gear

if your using metal screws into plastic motor mounts use super glue as thread lock (install fatter screws )

pull the engine back towards you and tighten your motor mount screws

.......best solution is alloy motor mounts and blue locktite

Yup, Do above ^^^^^^.

Also if the screws have stripped, and a fatter one or super glue wont work, on some models you can use a longer screws even ones that go through the entire mount and bite into new plastic.

You will need a new gear. Once the teeth grind or round a certain way they will push themselves apart from each other. I even tried filing them back with no luck. Get new gears with a new cheap plastic mount until the alloy mount can be purchased or if the other fixes do not work.

Thx guys. I have the large alloy mount. I am just working up the nerve to install. :)

One thing too, if anyone else has these problems, if you start and replace the Mount screws to a machine thread screw, it will grip a lot more up to 50% more grip, and last longer, just be careful not to overtighten them.

FYI when using loctite, be sure to try some on a non-crucial area of any plastic you will be threading into, as some loctite eats plastics.

Good tips... the motor keeps coming loose even with loctite. I guess I should stop slacking and do the mount install. Anyone have a step-by-step?

Don't know if anyone has tried this, but would putting some sort of threaded metal insert into the plastic motor mount help? I've seen the inserts at Ace Hardware, but not sure if they would work. Might be worth a try.....that way you could use loctite.

No most inserts are not designed for the "soft" plastic that is used in RC. Usually if you strip a screw that is pretty much it, besides installing one with a bigger OD its not going to be like new again, until you replace or upgrade the part. I have seen people use epoxy (try it first on a spare area to make sure it does not eat the plastic) in the hole they stripped out, then insert a screw as it is still soft, although this will be hard to remove, and may cause more headache than its worth.
