I first did this thread about a nylon rod roll cage but I decided to go with 4130. Nylon was a cheap material that I used for my savage cage.

I built a nylon rod roll cage and it was really strong and I never had any problems during a wreck. My savage was jumped violently and often. We bashed the snot out of it and never broke the cage or anything under it. I want to build a chromoly cage but my welder is gone off shore for a month now. A good sign that work is picking up but bad for my cage.

Nope, didn’t have to heat it you just needed to put a little muscle into the tubing bender. I am sure the nylon roll cage held up great on the Savage or any nitro for that matter but with my driving style on my 30+ pound Rampage I would kill a nylon roll cage in about 10 seconds. :D

I'm using a no named brand bender just like that Rigid. It's best to put the handle into a vice so that you can put your force into the bending handle. Initially it takes a good amount of force to get the bend started but once you get past 15 degrees or so it gets easy.

Also, at least on my end, it takes a few days to finish a cage. If I start on a Saturday morning I can have the tubing cut, bent, prefit, and tacked together that evening. The next day would be spent welding, griding weld beads to make the look better, final fitting, and then putting a primer coat on for the night. Third day would be for painting. A more motivated person could do it faster. I take too many smoke and beer breaks :) . Actually, building a cage is just an excuse to go out in the gargage drink some beer and make sparks fly :D .

Also, here's my cage build threads:
