Spur gear stripped

I had a good first proper run the other night until I lost drive ... the spur gear is stripped and melted lol

Cant think why though, moving the car around the wheels move freely so I don't think the back end can have locked up. I can only wonder if the pinion gear isnt made properly and is ever so slightly out of alignment.

It was a tight mesh but there wasnt really much I could do about that. Oh and I wasnt jumping it.

Ive ordered a hostile spur gear and genuine hpi pinion as I don't trust the KM one is machined accurately enough.
 
i had the same problem when my sq baja was new,i found that some of the teeth on the pinion gear were sharp and others were flat on the ends, i got a hpi pinion that solved the problem, there should,nt be any tight spots when turning the spur gear by hand.

I think that might be the problem, sharp teeth. Just got my replacement gears and the hpi pinion has squared off teeth. Hopefully get up and running for the weekend :D

also make sure there is no in and out movment on the spur gear there is a spacer behind the spur but i had to put a 2mm shim washer behind it aswell, i run a bit of grease on the spur and pinion allso, a lot of people say they don,t need it but why not the are gears after all,

Hmm I might put a little light grease on, cant do any harm and if it keeps the movement smooth thats what we want
 
check the clutch bearings too, if they are worn they can send the fiction through to the pinion and can get really hot and melt the spur.
this has just happened to mine so i've swapped them with the front wheel bearings.
