starting engine without pipe or muffler

I know its not wise but if i was to start they engine just to check if it runs would i damage anything ?
 
And could someone show me what checks i need to do to start a engine that hasn't me run for a long time i.e the spark plug is new ive cleaned the fuel likes ?
