Steering problem. Repaired now/parts WTD!

Another issue! My car has decided it won't steer in a straight line now.
One wheel is toed in more than the other, and when dry steering, it will only full lock in one direction.

I am yet to drive it, as the batts were flat. Gonna take it out now, but I reckon it's gonna pull to the side :/ Nothing appears bent or broken, and everything is as it should be. I am thinking the steering servo is fkd?

I am sure it used to full lock both ways.when steering dry.

What's it sound like to those in the know?

what radio do you have?
that will help in determining what you can do with it.and the solutions

have you adjusted the steering travel? and you should also be able to adjust the trim?

most radios have the trim adjustment on or around the steering knob or on transmitter should say "St. Trim" that should center out the straight line issue

as for travel thats where the wheels thats where you determine how far the servo will go in each direction, if you radio does not have that option your gonna have to remove your steering horn and recenter,
you really don't want that servo to hit full lock anyway thats a good way to burn it up or it could get stuck and not return

Posting this on my mobile with a v low batt so please excuse the shortness...

I have a Core Code 2.4 ghz 3 ch stick and receiver (forget model number) When I adjust the steering trim on the transmitter it doesn't seem to change on the Baja. Maybe it's because I need to remove the weight from the road wheels? It just seems like it is low on power (the servo).

I drove it, and it was as expected. Pulled to the right all of the time.
I reset my transmitter just to be on the safe side.

Can these cars do this to the steering themselves? Also, got a guide or anything for removing the steering horn?

Thanks as ever (and excuse the lack of knowledge!) Liam.

Do you have a dual rate setting on your tx i had the same prob and noticed i had some how adjusted my stearing dual rate! also found that my steering servo was nowhere near centre so removed servo horn reset and centerd servo!

Cheers for the reply.

Doesn't sound familiar mate? It's this model, if any of that info is of use?

As I have reset the transmitter now, even if I had adjusted a setting without realising, it should now be back to basics, right?

Any info on how to remove and centre the servo horn mate? I guess it's probably straight forward, but to save any more damage, I would rather ask!

Yeah that tx does have steering rate adjustment mate. I find it easier to just pop the radio box out to take the horn off its only a couple of body clips to take the box out and you just pop the connector off the ball on the horn. then your free to take the horn off then turn on yor tx and rx and centre the trim on your tx pop the horn back on radio box back in pop con onto ball job done then your free to adjust tour teim and straighten it out. If this don't work then i reckon your servo may be shot. I know a lot of guys have had trouble with the KM steering servo's not had that problem myself. I have the exact same buggy as you it came from Heat Hobby in the states!

Thanks for that fella. IIRC, one of the wheels is toed in further than the other now. Although it may just look that way due to the extremes the outside wheel leans to when on lock?

I will give that a go tomorrow and see how I get on. How much is a decent steering servo roughly mate?

As for the buggy, maybe this is why mine was £130 from Gumtree lol!

Swap ya :P

If it tanspires I do need a new servo, is this spec adequate?

Your gonna need a large scale servo as the steering servo on these things is about three times bigger than a standard servo I'm not too sure on price but it's more like 25 kg of power you need on steering for these monsters! When I get to my computer will find some links for you am on my phone at the moment as I'm helping my cat give birth lol!

did you get that used?

I see. Cheers for that mate. Here's me thinking you were watching MOTD/TFLS like me lol
did you get that used?

Yeah, it was a month old. Had only ran a tank, tyres like new, came with all spares and tools etc., and not a mark on it. A bargain I thought?

i figured that by the price you got it at,maybe thats why it was cheap?
get yourself a kill siwtch if you don't have one already.
a 25KG servo? thats what 55lbs in the u.s.? i have never seen a 1/4-1/5 scale servo with that much power of 880 oz., the one i use has 555.5 oz which is 35lbs of power at 1"

Yeah i did think after posting that i may have been a bit out lol my bad

I will get a kill switch shortly. It had one inbuilt into the standard radio, right?

As for it being cheap, I dunno. The guy wanted £250, and I made a cheeky offer and bought it immediately (drove 150 miles for it). Sometimes it's worth making an offer lol.

Like I say, it was faultless, and basically brand new when I got it.

Cheers for the servo advice lads! :)

Ah, you're back! How are mother and kittens doing mate?

Yeah they are doing ok mate thanks for asking was up till 5 this morning with her she was having quite a bit of trouble so i had to lend a hand but got there in the end. She had four good sized and healthy babies and we are keeping them all so gotta come up with some names now! takes our total to 1 chinchilla 4 female rats and 5 cats! Think i might start charging the kids in the neighbourhood to come see them all lol.

I got my KM from Heat Hobby in the states i won it on ebay and even with import duty still only cost me 360 quid brand new all boxed! you got a good deal on urs mate! That stick radio you got is what i have been looking at as i don't really get on with the wheel type i guess im a bit old skool! Plus mine is only 2 channel so i wanna go 3 channel so ican get a super bee kill switch! Most if not all 2.4ghz radio's come with a failsafe on the reciever nowa days but thats not really sufficient with these petrol motors as they don't kill the engine and you could still suffer a run away!

As for the power of the servo i was a little bit wrong with that but you will need a large scale one. There a lot of places on line like MMR and such that sell them always an idea to scope out ebay too always some good deals to be had on there! I know a lot of guys normally favour Savox or Hi-Tec servo's but there sems to be others out there that look quite reasonable.

Great news on the cats mate! :) Sounds like you have quite the zoo going on there lol. Nice one.

From what I've seen and read, you definitley got a great deal! Mine wasn't bad I agree, but when you're not 100% sure what you'e getting, then it's always a gamble. As I shall explain below lol.

As for the radio, you're right, it's definitley what you are used to. I had to bin that trigger setup asap. I was amazed at the lack of 3 ch 2.4 ghz stick options out there mind. :( I can highly recommend this one though. Can't be robbed for £70 for tx and rx delivered.

Ok, i've fixed the steering. I had a look at the Baja this afternoon, to reset the servo horn. That made no difference, so I looked a little deeper and found the issue.

The plastic things (B048 and B051 in manual I think) where the track rod ends and part of the front bulkhead (B109) attach had dislocated from the bulkhead/bearing area. This is due to the front end being shaped like a banana! I guess you really shouldn't jump them too hard lol. Oh well, I'm learning.

I stripped it down and as you can see, the top plate (A003) was fairly bent. So was the unbraced flat section of the chassis that is directly beneath it. I was unsure at the time what shape this was meant to be. It is not 100% flat now, but after looking in the manual I see it should be.

I am not impressed with how feeble this is tbh! I remember seeing a thread on here where the OP said he bent his chassis easily, and people said it wasn't very likely. Well here's another one. :D

Whilst stripping it down, I noticed that a part was broken (B051 I think). Please see the pictures, as I need a new one of these now. Where is best, and what is the part name?

The previous owner has performed a worthy bodge - but still could have told me - he has forced the screw from the track rod end in higher up the arm, and wound the track rod out to compensate and reallign the wheels. This also explains why when I lost a wheel, I only had one bearing in that upright. Bell end!

What I don't understand, is how he managed to smack it reasonably hard and not mark the car at all. Like I say, it was like new still.

fiddlestick it, it's OK now, and will be spot on with a new part, as the wheels aren't bang on straight, and can't be atm. Although it still drives true enough. I will keep an eye out for a better steering servo bargain I think though.

I took the opportunity to make a paper template of the top alloy plate, with the view to having a steel one cut out at work. I reckon this will toughen the front end up considerably.

Have some poopy pics:

Looked Ok to me here...

It's not though.

Hopefully a steel on of these will make it more like I hoped it would be.

Thanks again for all of the advice and ideas everyone. If anyone has the part I need, or can tell me where to get it from I would appreciate it!
Liam.

i had replaced the plastic steering assembly on mine too, old one wasnt broke but i wanted a better one on it, so i went with alloy steering assembly. also used a set of TFE shims to take up any slop in it when installed.

yah that top plates definately bent up. i don't dukes of hazzard mine but i have done some bunny hops with it. cuz i don't want bent up frame parts, lol.

big jumps will lead to bent parts, no matter what the brand, keep that in mind.
