Only owned my mt for few days, was all running fine till started herring a clunk noise on take up of drive , checked all gears are meshed correctly no signs of any wear.. This sound is getting worse and
now constant grinding noise ,, the diff spins free but has fair bit of play?? If it is diff is it worth upgrading to a all alloy unit??? Are they common to fail.. Anybody locked there's solid????

sounds like the diff from here! it would say its worth getting a alloy diff it will last much longer and do the job better there should be any play in there. my when on my fg monster truck i upgrades to the alloy one so far so good :cool2: check on ebay hope this helps : http://www.ebay.co.uk/ there is a couple on

It the meshing of the diff gear and the layshaft gear. On visual inspection the meshing will seem ok cos its not under load and the wearing of the teeth on the layshaft gear will be on the front edge where it is slipping so might not be that obvious until you remove the gear for a proper inspection.
This happens cos your engine mounts move slightly. Have you got plastic or ally engine mounts? Realign the engine so that the gears mesh good & tight then tighten the engine mount screws (don't forget the thread lock!). If you have plastic mounts make sure they are still in good order and the screws are not spinning in the holes. If the threads have gone get some new mounts. Then tighten up the bracket from the diff to the back of the large engine mount & it should be good to go :cool2:

I speak from experience of the exact same problem :clown::clown:

Oh and check your engine mount screws for tightness periodically. They may need nipping up from time to time :)

100% agree with dwarfy, I had the same problem.

Ive run over 20 tanks in my MT and its still the original diff. I suspect its the meshing of the layshaft and diff gear. Might be worth removing the diff and check for any metal shavings around the diff area, this is what I found. they were meshing to tigh, loosed it a bit and all good.

Also make sure like dwarfy said check engine mount screws as this will effect how the diff and layshaft gears mesh.
