went out with my leo again today and it started to loose power checked everything but all ok so brought it home and took exhaust off and had a look inside!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr very big score marks in the head :2guns::2guns::2guns: removed the head and found the exhaust side all polished and the carb side all scored :crying: does that mean it's f@*ked, i'm not impressed as the head kits only had about 5 tanks of fuel through it but i do have a k&n style filter on it would that have let crap through into the motor and recked it??????

If your off roading Charl use the FG standard foam with a TGN red neck, gotta be the best combo! Theres a small clip that holds the wrist pin in,make sure thats still there(all of it) It came out of one of mine and obliterated the engine!

hi james yeah the little pins are still there mate :(

Voo, is there a prefilter that fits over the K&N style filter? Will the redneck do the job on these? I have been thinking about changing to standard but if a pre filter will do happy days :)

what would be the best combo to do now for a head ? stick with 30cc or zen coversion? what cc should i go for if i do a zen coversion ? :)

Charlie,
Sorry to hear about that..
What kind of filter are you using? If you got a K&N I would toss it. They are great for on-road but a killer for off road. Especially in dusty conditions.

Like Voo said. Get the stock sponge with the TGN redneck oiled up really good. I would also recommend a good outerwear sock for it especially for dusty conditions.

As a last precaution, check your gaskets to make sure nothing came though there. It's a long shot, but it could happen sometimes.

Good luck

Chris

Oh Charlie looks like you had to learn the hard way like I did a few months ago. I have a FG MT with a 30.5cc as well and sucked in dirt the same way thinking K&N was the way to go. Check out DDM and look for the 30.5cc ESP CHAMPIONSHIP RACE PORTED head kit. Its a GP290 and add a 2mm crank and a good pipe and it has so much power i had to replace my drivetrain with all steel gears. Its pulling 6HP and 50MPH on the radar gun. The power is insane. Make sure it says ESP CHAMPIONSHIP RACE PORTED AND FULLY MODIFIED. Doug did an awsome job on the port work on these kits and I run a little extra oil for extra protection. I run Ams Oil 20:1, and the lean it out till it screams.

Once you get your new motor, make sure to run good oil and a proper break in period. 4-5 heat cycles for the first tank. Get the motor good and hot and then shut it down so the motor cools completly, then fire it up and do the same for 4-5 heat cycles. You want the motor hot then cool it all the way down to seat the piston. After that, start checking the plug color. After a wide open hard run, shut the motor down and pull the plug. don't let the motor idle at all possible. Your plug should be carmel brown almost like a dark paper bag. If the plug is wet and black you can still lean it out for more power. Remember high speed passes, good and hot, then kill the motor fast as possible and check your plug.

If you go with the large 30.5cc, you can gear it up and you wont lose the bottom end torque. I went up two sets of gears and and the 30.5 still pulls 5' rooster tails. I hope this helps, Hills...

the hpi baja filter is a good alternative. I like using them. $30 gets a dual stage filter with a spare outer sleeve and add an outerwears.

sucks when it happens to a nice motor. I killed a 23 with a k&n

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! :no::no::no:

What a bummer bud, like the guys say, get a standard foam filter and a pre-filter (thats what i use). DDM sell um plus get some filter oil too, got mine of DDM for around $8-OIL and around $12-Prefilter.

cheers guys, i'm a bit p*ssed off realy as i had the standard filter on with a pre filter too and was told to change it for the k&n style :2guns::2guns::2guns: anyway damage is done and theres nowt i can do apart from learn from my mistakes :clown: and fork out some money for a beta motor convesion :cool2:

Well Charlie you can do all that heat cycle stuff.I put this on the forum a while back and near everyone came back with this answer.....Thrash it from the start!. Heres a vid of me running the Beetle in on the first tank,it is now fully broke in and if you gave it full throttle from the start it will wheelie! and thats a MARDER as well!
