if it melted there's a problem. do you have a bad bearing causing heat? I've used fuel tubing as a spacer, some guys take the springs out of AA battery holders. I just like the earplugs because a dab of shoe goo (I use that crap on everything it seems) will keep the foam from falling out
 
One side it was perfect fit, the other, I think the diff cup washer was thin a bit, and causing the bones to move more, so replaced that washer with thicker one and put the plug in the cups again. This is the engine pull start side btw.
