Hey all. Have a mod here I thought I'd share with you.

Last week, I decided to remove the SuperBuggy cage and it will go on the build im doing from all myspare parts.

When I took the SB cage off, I regained the Mean Green build. But it has all the same items except the sb cage.

With the TS 30.5 and the Threshold "Dune" filter setup installed, the front/top of the air filter is protruding thru the roll cage front window area. This left it a bit exposed to some possible issue on a roll overs, ect... So I got to looking at it and determined I needed to do something soon.

This is a result of the angle of the intake on the TS cases, (which was needed to clear the tank in the bajas) and the overall lentgh of the Threshold, Dune filter system, which is just a bit longer than the stock setup. On the TS motors, the stock air filter system is about 1/4 inch back from the window area, where the Thresold system on the TS cases is about 1/4 inch thru the window area.

After checking around at what I had available here, I found a couple side body mount post stand offs. Thought, hey those would work Great. So, I comenced to doing some mods.

No pics of the mods being done, just after pics of the results.

But, what I did.

Cut the end off the side posts to shorten them to only the solid insert hole part (cut off at the lowest pin hole) and the pin that goes thru.

I then needed to use my dremel and a sanding drum. I thinned down the pin area on the shortened side post, so it would fit thru the chassis mounting hole.
I then had to do the same to the front cross bar pin areas, so they would in turn, fit into the holes on the modded stand offs. Once I had the front cage pins fitting snugly into the shortened side pins, I used superglue to secure them together. I may drill and insert a small bolt (m2 button head maybe, or a hinge pin) if the super glue doesn't hold up well.

But, this raises the front roll cage ara approximatly 3/4s of an inch. This is JUST enough room to lift the entire front of the cage above the Threshold filter so it is no longer exposed a bit thru the front window. this also lifts the cage off the filter on the pull starter side enough to allow it room to flex before the cage pushes into the air filter assembly.

Here are some after pics.

You can see the front top window is now flat where it needs to be and on the inside is Just missing the front/top of the filter.

Next time I have to work on that area, I plan to make 2 more front risers, but I will only cut the 1st part of the pin loop area off. So I can get a bit more height and have a bit more clearance around the filter.
But all in all, this will keep most any stresses on the cage where it belongs, and help releive the possibility of damage during a roll over.

Hope this can help some of you using a similar setup and experiencing some of these same quircks.

its a very well done system. just pay attention to the usual. grease the mating surfaces so all air MUST flow thur the filter. then be sure the bolts are actually holding the filter tight. I highly suggest you use the OEM Techemsuh filter, available from Wallmart of all places. its about 7.00 apeace, will come in a red blister pack that say Techumseh Power on them, and the filter will have made in mexico (has no metal rib, but good filter) or made in agrentina (has metal rib) molded into the face of it.

cover with an outerwares and all is good.

I need to mod my outerwares so they close more. the elastic is about wornt out of them both. i actually have 3 or 4 of them here that could use a new elastic or draw string.

not yet Treb. the issues isnt the housing as much as it is Filter Choices. there are probably 6 to 8 aftermarket filters made to fit/replace the OEM Techemsuh 36905 filter. BUT they tend to be shorter, not have as good filtering media, as well as are weaker in result to the low quality manufactureing process.

SO filter choice is CRITICAL to this setup functioning as it should.

there are only 2 filters worth buying. BOTH are OEM fitlers from Techumseh. one has Made in Mexico stamped on it, and is available here stateside at wallmart. it comes in a red blister pack and has Techumseh Power printed on the package in white lettering. price is around 7.00 usd
the other fitler worth having is also an OEM Techumseh filter. im not sure of the packageing. but the fitler has Made in Argentina molded into the front, AND it has a metal support rib in the rear area.

DO NOT BUY OR USE any other brand of filter, as it appears the aftermarket filters just are NOT up to the OEM Standards. Crazy i know, a cheap aftermarket piece not workin gas good as the OEM, but no worries, you saved 3.00 right?

USE OEM ITEMS PEOPLE< its pretty simple, but once cry once, or buy cheap and wheep by the week.
