Ok ive been into largescale for a while now but something that ive never really mastered is tuning, mainly because im paranoid about it LOL.

Am I correct in saying that as long as there is plenty of smoke and oil coming out of the pipe there is no way my tune is on the lean side?

I thought up until recently my tune was good, plenty of smoke, no break down in rpm up top and sounding really good until I pulled the plug out and noticed that it was looking a little grey.

Smoke out of the pipe is very deceiving.
The smoke can be different depending on the type of oil that is used.
I would always go by your plug color.
You may be dialed right in on your low end that lets oil build up and lots of smoke but your top end is lean and thats where you get the grey color.
Follow ESP's chart and it will help you make sure you are dialed in from low to high.;)

Kill switches really help. do some high speed runs and kill the engine when the revs are up and pull it in check plug. then you know if the top is tuned right, then do slow speed and kill and check... if you don't kill the engine and roll in to check you might be seeing the low setting by the time you pull the plug

yeah ive gotta pull my finger out and get a kill switch, i think ill spend more time checking the plug colour.

using a new plug how long running before it will give me an accurate reading by colour on tune?

but with a new plug doesn't it show the white in background for a while?

well i think i found something that certainly wasnt helping my tuning dilema!

doing some work last night getting it ready for the long weekend and noticed a pinhole in the fuel line spraying a tiny but steady stream underneath the carby!

ordered a new line and clunk late last night.

could the pin hole in the fuel line (not return line) affect my tune?

it will affect it yes cause your sucking in air aswell which will cause it to run lean and maybe unsteady .
defo change the pipe and return the carb settings to standard which are low 1 and a quater and high 1 and a half.
see how she runs and then try very small alterations from ther to your high screw.
hope this helps.

thanks jon, got the new pipe and clunk today, should get time tonight.

i might leave needles as is, if anything it will be a bit rich which wont hurt it.

i don't like going back to stock settings coz for some reason my tune is way off, i find I have to lean both needles, especially the HS needle allot to get any kind of performance out of it, its always been like that too. bit strange but seems to work that way.

Start with a rich hs needle setting, then pick the back wheels off the ground and go to full throttle, turn the hs needle until you get the highest rpm, then back it out 1/16 of a turn. That's it for the high speed.

Set the low speed by starting out rich and leaning it until you get a good snappy throttle response.

Simple and quick. I've been doing this for years. Using this method, my plugs are always just a touch on the black side. I also find these motors are alot easier to tune if it's piped.

Good Luck.
