Hiya, just got my two speed today and need a bit of advise.
The gears are 22 + 20 pinion and 42 + 40 spur. Are the both meant to turn the same time? i.e turn one pinion ans the other and the both spurs move at the same time? Is the any tutorials out there to help or is there a vid ?
Any help on this one lads before I give the seller feedback.

James,
If I remember correctly they are supposed to move at the same time. At low RPM's the first set will engage and the other set will still spin but freely, than, when the second set engages the reverse happens... I don't know of any tutorials, I'm sure Pipeous will be able to elaborate a bit more on the subject..

Yeah ..the gears both spin...but the second gear free wheels..tell you have enough
speed to kick in the claw to grab the pin......Your gears are ok.....I have 18/20 & 44/46
You will get better speed cuz of the smaller spur gears..........Slaw

Noticed on voo2doo 2 speed today that both seem to be permanently turning together, i asked him if 1 should be spinning freely until the 2nd speed engages and thats why the question has been asked.
The claw isn't engaged so its not that sticking.
Think it needs pulling apart to find out why both are turning.

Sure he'll work it out.

Do you have it mounted in the car?....maybe missing pin or bad claw....Slaw
PS..Old drill bit works ....Cut to the size you need ...same size as the pin.Dia

Pulled it apart today and everythings free. I have a spare motor knocking around in the workshop so I'll mount it and test it tomorrow.

VooDoo..You know there is a way bearing...in the ..think second speed housing...
you can get those if need be...you can check rc car on-line for the 2spd
look at Fg 7450...there called free wheel sleeve#7461 or better yet( HF1012 bearing)
shift claw#7489....Clutch bell#7460.........That will give some idea's
I would think the Hf1012 bearing you can find cheap enought....Hope this helps....Slaw

Cheers Slaw, but hopefully its ok,as said everything is free and the claw is free to!Gonna run it up tomorrow and I'll post the results.

You can also adjust the tension on a spring that controls the shift point. It is the spring that holds the claw in until a certain RPM is reached. Sometime you have to tinker with a 2 speed to get it just right.

...........Voo2Doo I didn;t know that MCD made a 2 speed where did you get it???

VooDoo....Dah ..non think eariler..forgot about the adjust spring.....
But those part numbers will help you out if need be later.......Slaw

Jackobyte came down today for a bit of tinkering around???( Ooo-Err!) with the cars.
We put the two speed in the vice to see if we could get it to shift but couldn't hear anything so he videoed it to see if anyone out there can tell me if this is the way they are supposed to work?
Any help would be appreciated.

Voo2doo, I have not read the whole thread, so excuse me if someone has already said what I am about to suggest.

1: make sure the 2 speed mechanism is not backwards ( black disc )
2: make sure your small gears ( pinion ) are not striped, even if they are not spinning around the shaft by hand, they may spin free around the shaft under pressure causing your 2 speed not to shift....always use steel or alloy pinions. the plastic tend to round out at the hole.
3: on your second gear ( 40 tooth ) take it off and turn it around, make sure you see the pin on the back of the carrier, if there is no pin or it is bent, the 2 speed claw cannot engage.
4: check to make sure the 2 speed bearing is good and spins freely.

if all these check out to be good, it can only be the ball and spring located in the 2 speed mechanism that needs to be replaced only if the claw is weak and coming out easy, if not, this is not the problem, revert back to #1 or #2 , that has to be it.

Good luck

I can't tell if the 2nd gear spur was actually turning the shaft or not, the 2 speed will work in first if there is no second gear but it won't work without first at all to spin it up to revs.

the 2 speed won't engage, or shouldn't until the layshaft is up to the rpms for the pin to engage. go slow in revs and really listen. if it is shifting really low it is hard to tell sometimes.

Voo, the only things you really need to check are the one-way bearing is working, the cam is free to move and that the pin is still in the 2nd gear. If you have all of these then it's only the adjustment that needs tweaking.

You can hear the two speed shift, I can hear my truck shift on dirt and tarmac, and if I hold it up and rev it in my hand.

What gearing are you using and on what car?
