i've been running 5b dom pipes modified by sprint77 on rrf but with my new cage build it would have been vunerable especially the stinger side so i came up with something different...totally protected and restores the oringinal 5b dom header length. i started with a 77 dom but with a new 5b rear dom this mod is too easy. I'll mount brackets to the cage and pipe when the cage is finished.

That's awesome moo! How do you build a cage like that? Type of material? Bending? Welding? I'm just wondering. I've wanted to do it to all kinds of my rc's for years but really have no clue.

Cage is made from 3/8 OD 4130 chrome moly tube .049" wall. i got a 3/8 ridgid pipe bender and an industrial mig welder. 4130 should be welded with a tig if you're building an aircraft but welds fine with a mig with 4137 wire for other applications, especially for this cage ...if you're building a 1/1 race car then the welds should be annealed after.

Then after you have some tools start bending, hacksawing and filing to make all the pieces. I started with the main hoop behind the engine and worked off of that, tack the bits first to check for fit and symmetry then weld as much in place as possible so that it doesn't warp to much when it's removed for final welding.

Here is the near finished cage...just waiting for some 1/4" .035 tube to arrive to finish the cross bracing

Looks super Moo...I think you out did your self there....
Give it a good test on roll overs.....Awsome job as always my friend....Slawhammer

cage only weighs 2.5lb, proline 5t body, mounts and stock cage weigh 2lb so net gain of only 8oz and you can jump on this cage from a great height. Total weight should come in around the 29-30lb mark

Looks good Julian, just don't burn the hands filling the tank.

I only wish I had a welder (tig, mig, oxy or arc) and pipe bender. never even tried mig or tig. great job. another envy moment from the guy across the swimming hole

oh and I am not getting auto emails for pm's on rrf, so I have to check the site for your pm's

Here's the cage and pipe all done, used a clutch spring under slight tension as an exhaust mount, ran it for 5mins yesterday, this truck is quick, just spins the tires off the line on ashpalt, was having a blast drifting and then the th/br linkage came off , worse still my Nomadio react took a dump...no toggle mode on ch3 or 4 so now no killswitch, lucky i didn't have a runaway. tried everything to get my react going again but no toggle on either my tt or mt rx's but the steering and th/br mode work on those channels so i think my radio has to go for repair...damn
Think i'm going to mount a wing on the back as well

Nomadio back up and running, Scott and his customer service was excellent, emailed last night reply first thing today and instant emailing til I got it sorted, still don't know the cause other than a real stubborn software glitch maybe.

Now I'm running again i'll try and get some vid of this caged cat .

Good job, sure nice when it's something simple and stupid. I was just looking at DDM's deal of the day, jetpro v4 baja pipe. wonder how that would fit in a kitty?
