I've recently bought an older used Rovan with 36cc engine and it keeps breaking the pull starter. I'm on my 3rd one now and could use any help or advise on what to do? Thanks for any help.

It's the metal piece inside of the plastic that is coming out and getting twisted on the inside. I also bought a drill starter and it seems to have stripped the one-way bearing inside of it. It turns over and tries to start, but then kicks back like a big dirt bike or old Harley with a kick starter.

First thought is you don't need to yank on it like you want to kill it. I generally tug it kind of easy especially the first few inches until the pawl is engaged.
Not sure if this is the cause but just thinking out loud.

Also wondering what was breaking.
Yes, that is what I do. I pull easily until I feel the pawl lock up with the magneto, then pull on it. It has more compression than any weed eater or chainsaw I've ever started. It will run though, I got it running one time, and it ran well.

I just ordered this kit and we will see what it does for me. This is whats listed on Rovans web site for the 36cc engine.

I have seen that setup as well but know nothing about it.
Only thing I question is the added weight to the flywheel itself when that pawl assy. is bolted on. Most try to lighten and not add weight , not sure it makes any difference though.
Only suggestion would be some threadlocker on those two bolts.

Yes, I usually put blue thread lock on almost every bolt or nut I take off. It should be here sometime tomorrow and post up the results.

Bingo! That was the wrong Flywheel and pull starter. The new one in the picture works flawlessly and is easy and smooth when pulling it. I bought the car from a young guy and he probably bought the lightened flywheel and then bought the starter and pawl to go with it, but it just doesn't work. Like Smokinwheel said, it looks like a bad design. Thanks for the help, everyone. :)(y)

Good to know it works , and better than it was is always good. Mine works but it is a little on the sketchy side, so I am careful. If I ever have it go bad, I now know that this is a fix for it.
