I was just breaking in the xb (first tank) and it was going from low idle, to high idle, to low idle, high idle....

Is it supposed to keep ranging rpms like this when breaking in? When the idle got high enough to start moving the car, I called it a day.

Any info would help.

Vent the gas cap.
Thanks, I just finished venting it.

I tightened all bolts as tight as possible, even tho none of them were actually loose.

I will test the buggy later today and see if it worked, and thanks to you all for your input on this.

Sounds like an air leak. Make sure the carb bolts are tight, and check for damaged gaskets.
So I reset the carb and then tested it, but now it revs really high when started, then bogs out and dies. This happens in a matter of seconds.

Did I flood the engine?? And btw nothing changes with the idle screw being adjusted, it dies anyway.

That's an air leak, for sure. Check all of the gaskets on the engine. Pay special attention to the carb gaskets and the head gasket.
Ok, well I guess I will order new gaskets and a 990 performance carb, and hopefully everything will be good.

Anyone have good luck with copper gaskets? I just saw them on davesmotors, but I'm not sure what the best gaskets are.

I've never had a failure with the stock paper gaskets. I've tried the copper head gaskets, and I didn't really like them. I could never get the squish within spec. The blue paper gaskets will be fine as long as the head bolts are torqued properly. Also, you can get the 990 from Gizmomotors for cheap.

Thanks bro, 35 sure beats 60! The gaskets don't even look bad on the carb, but I haven't checked the cylinder or exhaust but whatever, I guess its better to just get new ones anyway.

I will actually give it one more shot tomorrow, so do you know the exact stock xb carb settings? One dude said it was L .5 and H .75 but normal carbs usually have 1 + turns out on both needles. I don't know if those were typos, and he meant to say 1.5 and 1.75 or what.
