Okay it really started Sunday when I took my Xlink out for a spin and couldn't get it started(not to mention my youngest throwing my new Spektrum out of the car and busting the antenna off). No problem I thought I will have a look in the week.
So today I checked the fuel and it was fresh and getting to the carb.
Then I checked the plug and it was giving a lovely bright blue spark.
It still wouldn't go and by now I'm tweaking the H and L jets and the Idle screw and after around 50 pulls I'm thinking it's got to be flooded, so I set about taking the plug out and carb off to dry the chamber. I managed to get some fuel out, but it seemed to still be flooded, so this is the first thing I learnt.
If you take the pull start off and attach a 12mm socket and extension to a drill you can spin the motor over a lot quicker and if you slightly cover plug hole with a finger all the excess fuel just fires straight out all ready to go without having to wait for hours for the fuel to evaporate.
So all dry and ready to go but still no joy, so I check gaskets and compression which was all ok, so here goes the second thing I've learnt.
Never trust a plug that gives a spark because I put a new plug in and the bloody thing started on the first pull.
All I have to do now is tune it up again after buggering around with the needles. Happy Days.

Hi Matt,
Be careful not to start the car with your drill and the 12mm socket as it does not have a bearing that will slip when the motor starts. You can get hurt. Good idea though to take the gas out of the engine.

The roto starters use similar mechanisms as the pull starter ones, but are a little more complex. I believe they have a one way bearing and no Powl claw like the pull starters do. I am basing my assumptions on the roto starter i had on a nitro once as i do not have one on my large scale yet. ;)

Hi Chris, Yeah quite true about starting on the drill I'm guessing it can be a bit dodgy.
I've seen the one way bearings in my Kyosho inferno gs21 pull start, maybe I will have a play with knocking one up, but now the plug is sorted it starts like a dream and I don't mind a bit of exercise:clown:

You start getting the callouses in your hand, and your arm feels soar the next day. And they say RC is not a sport..LOL.. ;)

i do the nitro trick.

plug out, flip car so any excell fuel will go into the exhaust pipe. pull it over a dozen or so times. when i flip it upright, i roll it so any fuel that made it to the pipe will flow to the exit hole and drain out.

then let it set for 10 mins plug out and piston at BDC. put plug back in after 10 mins and attempt to start with no choke and WOT throtle.

if nothing let off wot and try. if still nothing, apply choke and pull over 3 to 4 times max. if you get no pop, its either still flooded, or something else is amiss.

a severly flooded motor can be a real PITA to get running again. atleast anytime soon. lol
 
if it won't start in the first 2 or 3 pulls, something is wrong. That said I bet we all have done the arm curl scenario at least once lol

Matty,same thing happened to Jackobyte.He couldnt get his started and when he came down to my house we put a new plug in and .....BANG!!!...it started first pull! Just goes to show,never trust a plug that still sparks.
