As it says.....
I need to update my web browser (just had laptop fettled & it came back with IE6!) and was thinking of trying google chrome. Anybody else using / tried it? Comments please or best alternatives!!

I use opera browser and have done for years
If you do manage to crash it (very rare) When you reopen , it will give you the choice to start from your home page(s) or open the tabs that were open before it crashed.
Has a built in email client, chat client, rss feed reader etc

It rocks

So does IE8.....

I'm a Microsoft guy... I develop in it and use it... IE8 might load slower, but then again it has to do a lot more than just browse... you might not need all these options so a cripled...hmmm... slim lined browser might do for you... In that case FireFox seems to be updated more often and up to date...

Even though some features have to be developed differently to be completely compatible for both.. I develop for IE8 and then check FireFox and fix what it does not understand or don't like and I'm golden...

Now if you are in a corporate, business world or IE8 for its intranet capabilities would be my choice.

I know there are a lot of Microsoft haters out there, and hate anything microsoft no matter what... I in the other hand I'm the opposite. I develop in Visual VB, .ASPX .NET... and others so I might be a bit partial.

This is just my opinion, please don't flame me for it!

Another note: GET OUT OF IE6!!!... It has major problems and security risks!

Some info from MS web about the intranet option I mentioned above...

Expanded Group Policy support now includes 100 new Group Policies, which means more than 1,300 are now supported.
The Internet Explorer Administration Kit 8 allows you to customize Internet Explorer 8 for your organization with preset home page, favorites, and more.
Windows Server® Update Services helps you manage the distribution of important updates and patches for the browser on your schedule. Systems Center Configuration Manager helps you deploy Internet Explorer 8 in your organization.

These would be some of the thing I need to use in my Office ambient.

Here is a complete list of Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows Internet Explorer 8.
No other browser can give me this....

I'm on chome as well, I only use it for surfing the web and I like the slimline interface. It runs fast enough on my 6 year old laptop (I tried IE7 and and too slow, IE8 seemed slower still).

I tried Ubuntu with firefox for a while in the hope that it would speed things up, but it didn't and the lurning curve was too steep for me to persevere.

Im using vista and works just fine for me ,google chrome it might seam faster now but just wait till you get your fair share of cookies built up, and your back to square one, slow mo computer just defrag your computer once a week and get shot of your cookies and stop looking at porn lol

Operas not a slim line browser
it has email,irc,rss clients etc
it has way more in it as standard than ie or firefox

The thing I don't like about microsoft, is the fact they force you to use ie
you go to the update site and do the windows validation thing to download stuff and it only works in ie
so what's the point in letting us choose another browser and then forcing you to use ie anyway

They have just been to court over that I believe and now a screen pops up with the various other options to download.

yes but microsofts validation tool fails in opera and firefox, so you have to use ie
which defeats the whole idea of having a choice, because they force you to use ie on microsofts site

You have to remember that a lot of IE Browser capabilities are part of the operating system... so theres really no way to remove this intertwined set of objects that are shared through out the whole operating system, without crippling the OP.

I were MS I too would not trust in an open environment to activate or verify activation of my OP, they are trying to verify legality of the installation of the OP and we all know how many Illegal copies of Microsoft's OP are on-line at this moment!

For this same reason all MS OP's since Vista... that includes Win 7 do NOT use the browser for updates any more... they use an Update aplication that does not need IE to be active

BTW: I just Officially updated to Win 7 Ultimate x64... today after many months of Beta testing all my apps... Got to say everything went smoothly and I'm talking about a mess of apps:crying:

So far not one glitch with the default IE8.. now SQL 2005 and Visual Studio 2008 were a little tricky but all in all and smooth transfer from a clean install.

XPmode works very well for those old apps that had refused to run in vista and needed a Virtual OP... this is now implemented in Win7 Pro +:):D

OK dudes, need some help here. I am not a computer expert at all :helpsmilie::no::no::no:
I THINK i am running IE6 and would like to change.
Am thinking of IE8, as it would be familiar and from what I can gather it is better for the computer divvies such as myself !!
What I would like to know is.... if I download IE8, will I automatically keep my favourites list cos I don't want to lose it ?? Or do I have to do anything special to transfer it over to IE8 ???
Cheers guys

My laptop came back with IE6 on it which started this thread. Im now on google chrome & its twice as fast as IE and simple to use. I would recommend it :cool2: Quite a few others are on it too with good results. Try it - its free to download and you can always go for IE8 if you don't like it :cool2:
