That was going to be my guess, about messing with the idle screw, my xt had that problem, turned in (in quarter turn increments), and it FIRED RIGHT UP! Good luck and good BASHING.
 
I literally had the same problem today, I used this video to reset my needles and it started and runs perfect. Before this video I could pull the cord about 20 times before it started..
