XT Tire Foam Replacement

Like everyone else, I recently noticed I had four 'flat' tires. So..., I set-out to find an affordable solution that will last. I have aprox. 10 tanks on these and have taken them back apart to inspect how they are holding up. So far, they are holding up great.


The fill is light weight. It starts out 2" thick, but compresses to 1.25" after use - which leaves the tire feeling, and weighing just like stock.


Through trial and error, I discovered that 3" wide/17" long is perfect. (18 & 19 are unbalanced and 4" is much harder to stuff in the tire).


I bought this stuff at a fabric store. There is enough to do aprox. 16 tires in one package.

I have been dealing with the XT flat tire issue myself i have been looking into some other brands and the one thing found in common with the more popular brand rc tire foams is that they are made of closed cell foam which is really cheap compared to some foams i looked at today at an upholstery shop the foam can be found on ebay and the best part is you can find some closed cell foams that are waterproof which if your like me is a must i will be ordering some of this foam and may have the upholstry shop cut it i will repost with results and maybe save some headaches

bump. what'd you find 95camaro? btw, i had an 84 trans am that had a 383 stroker in it. I blew a coke can size hole in one of the cylinder walls lol. gotta love those strokers.

I fixed 2 tires so far i only had enough acetone and gravel to soak 2 tires at a time i recieved the minicell closed cell foam in a 24"x24"x4.5" square which has a density of 2lbs per square foot very light once cut to size it is waterproof it's kind of stiff but works well the tires feel like real tires now i cut my foam into 8"x8"x2.5" squares with a serrated bread knife then measured to center and used a compass (at walmart $3) to make a 6 1/2" circle then cut out the circle with a scroll saw with a fine blade then used a 4" hole saw and cordless drill to drill out the center i will be posting pictures of materials and tools i hope this helps

I have been pretty busy and haven't been able to get the pics and everything together i tried to find some more foam on ebay but couldn't but i did find the website for the seller here is a link to there minicell foam and some priceing i ordered the black microcell 24"x24"x4.5" which is more than enough in case of mistakes for $41 i know it may seem a little expensive but i believe the foam will out live the tires http://www.foamforyou.com/minicell_foam.htm

same problem best solutionOk its raining today so i have some free time here are some pics of tools and materials also a pic of how to fold the foam to go into tire ok here we go first steps are to remove tires from rim (i prefer acetone) then we move on to cutting the foam into 8"x8"x2.5" squares and measure and mark centers then use a compass to make a 6.5" circle then cut out with a scroll saw now use a 4" hole saw and drill to cut out the center now the foam is complete do not cut to wrap around rim leave foam in a complete circle then fold as shown and insert into tire the rim should snuggly slide through now finish with your glue of choice sorry it took so long thanks everybody hope this helps some of you

Here are some pics of my XT after the foam change please overlook the glue job first time ever using gorilla glue you can see it gives it a higher stance the tire tread sets on the surface nicely and you can see that i am applying quite a bit of pressure to the tire to make it press down and i personally just like the way it made the tires look and feel thanks everybody

I sold the 95 camaro a while back i now have a 88 iroc with a 385 stroker which is currently down with a bad lifter so i decided to wait till this spring to put new aluminum heads a different cam and lifters different intake manifold electric water pump and a few other things
