this is for future references incase my 26cc Zenoah goes bad. my question is this do i need different motor mounts?

No not at all. All the 2WD motor mount for the 1:6's are the same. The Leopard Race and the FG 4WD's are different.

All the motors are set up the same. The R/C manufactures make there motor mounts fit he standard motors set up. So no, you will be ok in the event you buy a new one.

only the layshaft gear that drives the differential

No, the gears on the side will be matched. The gear that fit on the lay shaft that drives the diff will push the motor forward when changed to a larger one. This will be fine since the motor mounts move.
