got some useful info on your beloved zenoah engines once again!

so far i can name several builders that have had these cylinders fail, whether or not it was a cold seize on the piston in the transfer area, or a lean seize on the exhaust, or even a cracked base of a cylinder.. when the zen heads first came out a friend of mine had tipped me off and told me to watch the plating, if it looked spotted send it back! well till now i had not encountered that issue, but like i said until now.... well the cylinder i just ran was not ported, and did not appear to be blemished, and after a few pulls on the dyno my paranoia(lol) about these failing kicked in. i took the top end off to find my cylinder looking like a spotted leopard! there are tiny grey-ish spots everywhere!

needless to say i am not pleased with zenoah again!

i know im going to get crap for this but.... the cy 290's have gotten a bad rap for a while now but zen has cy beat in the failed cylinder department now! you say how is that?????? well lets think about this, the cy 290 came out how long ago??????????? and how many thousands were sold????????
and with all that time out you only here of one failing from time to time right??? well zen 36mm kits haven't been here 6 months yet and i myself have had 2 junks! not to mention all of the other people that i know of that have had them fail! to count off the top of my head i can name a total of 6 failed 36mm zens! thats not good odds for the time they have been available!

CLIFF NOTES: if u purchase a 36mm zen make sure you inspect it before installing it! you still may have a failure however if u spot something early you can possibly avoid having to make another top end purchase...

Interesting.....i've heard a lot of bad reports about zen & cy big bores...I had a 35mm cy die on the first tank & sperera has a 36mm cy that is close to death...

But I have 2, 36mm Rovansport cylinders....one with over 120 litres through it...still very useable....and another that's nearly 30 litres up.....still perfect...

Go figure...

that certainly is interesting TMR. ive only had a problem with my G260 when I put a CY head on it, 36mm bore as Rossco mentions about. problem was found after 1 tank of use.

I will stick with zenoah because its always been good to me, i wont go back to cy but thats because of my personal experience.

Good of you to share your personal experience after all it is your personal experience youve shared, and not necessariily how it is for everyone.

Interesting read. I just put two 36mm cylinders together. One in a 30.5 and one in a 29.5. 29.5 seems to be a pretty good running mill, haven't run the 30.5 yet. I'll have to keep an eye on them and report back. So far I have had no issues with Zen cylinders.

here are some pics of a 36mm zen before i ported it, yes thats right i ported it anyway! if it fails i will take the hit and do another one for my customer, what other choice do i have right????? ohhh btw this leopard looking cylinder helped me make 7.04hp and 2.76tq!!!!!
now that you have seen those #'s do you really think i want zenoah to fail and be having any issues????? this dyno secession was backed up multiple times and every low # pull i made was at around 6.7hp! i can even kick it up a notch and make more power with that cylinder , there is room for even more improvement!
those #'s were using a 1mm stroker, so it was a 29.5cc.. here is a link to the pics!

that sux dude :(

don't think im ever gunna pimp up my zen, at the mo i got the 26cc & just installed a new pipe, ive toyed with the idea of bore kits in the past but it seems hit & miss weather its gunna go pop on you afterwards! :(

Guess its a bit like overclocking a GFX card or CPU etc on a PC! if anything goes wrong chances are there goes the power! :(

What i don't understand is though, is there are many big bore kits out there from 3rd parties, why don't Zenoah design one? Or maybe they have tried but come across problems so gave it a miss? ...just seems strange that they don't do a range of kits for there 2 most popular rc engines.. G230 & G260 :s ?

Hope you understand I am not asking for pictures for proof. I just wanted to see what you were talking about. Were the spots pits or wear spots?

TMR, I currently am running a Zen 36mm head that i upgraded myself too, i have not found any problems with it as yet and it seems to be running very well so far.

So i would be interested to know more about what fuel/oil you were running... i have currently only put about 1.5 liters through it so far and have been using 98RON fuel with a mineral oil.
