Diff Drama

OK, I know that I have seen the thread somewhere, but I want to check the diff fluid in my new km buggy and can't find the thread

What do you want to know? Here is a link to the hpi baja 5b manual. This walks thought the process. It also shows how much fluid to use. Hope this helps. It really isn't that hard. When you take that first screw out of your new baja for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. I personally think everyone should do a full tear down and re-assemble so you learn what and where each component does and where it is located. Browse through this manual from start to finish. You will learn a lot about your buggy!

Thanks man. Feels pretty weird doing such an extensive teardown on a truck that I haven't even started yet. How do you get these frigging axle boot covers off? I don't want to rip them.

They just pull off. You have to work them off the drive cups. They will come off though. Work them from the cup. Don't pull on them from the narrow end over the dog bones. I used a small falt blade screw driver and got it started.

thats right, the large end on cups fit into a recess of sorts as the boot lips have a lil ledge on inside around edge, this pops into a groove around hub and on tranny case too, once theyre popped into those grooves it helps to keep boots in place. carefully use like mentioned a small flat screwdriver to work a spot out and it comes off easily, just remember unpon reassembly to pack the boots well with some TFE dogbone and diff grease.

well you just don't pull them off, they have a groove they go into and if they where dry fitted on, then you need the flat screw driver and work the end of the cup out of the groove and from over the axel cups

Best of intentions gone horribly wrong. While trying to dismantle the differential itself, I snapped one of the screw heads off. It just wouldn't break free. Will the differential still come apart if I get the other 3 screws out? Otherwise, I won't waste my time. Here's a pic...

Nope, definitely going the right direction. There were a few screws in this truck that were a bear to get out. Thanks man.

I finally got the diff apart. There was some diff fluid in the diff, but not quite as much as I would like. I still need to remove the broken screw, and will then refill. Decided on Mugen 30k diff oil and HPI diff lube. Although I was upset about breaking a screw in my diff, I still learned alot about my truck during the dis-assembly. All screws so far have been tight, which pleases me. I am also decently pleased with the quality so far. The only issues I have noticed so far are the chrome cage tabs for the rod under the wing are a little crooked, some of the anodizing is light, and the red stop button for the motor wont sit flush on the motor(its loose and falls out). I will create a separate post of my findings. Thanks again Lan for pulling an all-nighter with me!

if red stop buttons falling out the grooved part of it prolly isnt stuck in there right. remove the ps cover and then slide the button back in . the base of button has a grooved spot running top and bottom on it, the remaining engine case is notched out to fit the button, you have to make sure the edge of engine case slides in the grooved part on button bottom, and when ps cover is placed on it too has to line up on button recess groove, this is what keeps button secured when everythings together

Hey dude, do keep this thread updated yeah, a looot of pics would be nice too. I feel that you and I are in the same boat  i'll definitely be referencing a lot of your work :D

i just try to forward info i have learned along the way by reading/research, or finding out on my own. i figure i got the help when i was needin it, so why not help out by passing along what may help others out.

UPDATE:
I got the broken screw out of the diff. Will hunt for stainless screws tomorrow to replace the stock ones. Still waiting for the diff oil and grease to come in before reinstalling everything. Will take pics as I put everything back together. Can I go ahead and break in the motor without the diff installed? If so, I will go ahead and put the pipe back on and perform the break in.
