Hi all, just stripped down my diff housing as I need to replace the differential but Ive noticed that on the km/shengqi the lay shaft has only one bearing it rests into and a rubber type washer where the lay shaft comes out but in the hpi manual it dosnt have the rubber washer it has another bearing.I have test fitted a bearing against the rubber washer and it will fit so the lay shaft has two bearings like the hpi,is this ok to do and has anybody also done this?

ooohhwww, are you refering to having a bearing on eitherside of the diff housing supporting the layshaft? i beleive they do come with 2 bearings, my stock km diff had 2 on the layshaft, i know my integy diffs have 2 also

Thanks chitown joe, just checked the km manuals on line and it is spose to have the two bearings. The shengqi manual shows a slightley different set up with only one bearing.I wonder if they were trying to save money.Just got to wait for my alloy diff now.

This is another infamous missing bearing in the diff post.... Maybe to save cost? Seems like its normal with KM from what i have read.

some of the first released bajas were messed up that way and shipped with only one bearing, thus the one bearing deal most everyone had read bout. the latter releases they corrected and put both bearing in, mine had both. but as i had a full set of TFE bearing i went over all of them and replaced the originals, still in good condition with the tfe ones, the full set includes both the bearing for the diff/layshaft/, and since i had mine busted down i replaced the stock plastic tranny case with the quick diff split alloy case.

Was looking at complete bearing sets the other day, so what's your take on the TFE ones? There's the complete version and the 'Pro' version bearing sets too.. Wonder what's the difference?

NONE not bashing them, but some of the bearings carried by TFE are from Chixi bearing in china, i found this out when i purchased some of the TFE engine bearings that where suppose to be better then stock engine bearings but they wheren't since the stock cy and km bearings where actually better made by NTN, couldnt return them since not only do you have to pay the return shipping but you lose 10% for restocking fee's,they should post the bearing prefix info before you go out and buy a china bearing that's not worth it.
read the bearing prefixes before going out getting what you think will be better then what you got, if you have anything with NTN,SKF,NB,FM,TIMKIN, BCA these are better then a the chixi bearing,
if the bearing prefix starts with cizc then keep looking,
the girl i deal with in china for my km parts actually works for the chixi bearing company in cixi china, shows how small the world actually can be.

ask them for the bearing info prefix's ,load weight, rotation loads, etc

wow i didnt know all that, i had bought the pro series full bearing kit, replaced all the still good bearings on my truck with them, i did notice what seems to be a difference in the other set and the pro set, the pro set had a red seal on them, as mine did and the other set had a blue seal. don't know if its different material used for the seals, or just color, setting them apart.

i don't recall seeing the china markings on any of the bearings that were in the pro TFE set tho, i think it was one of the ones you stated as good ones.

however i believe i do recall that china markings on the original KM bearings i pulled out, they were still in good shape, but i knew i was gonna be breaking it down here and there for upgrading, and had read the threads regarding on how good the TFE bearings were supposed to be, is reason i got them.

seeing the 2 different sets, the one with blue seals and the pro set with red seals, i was reccommended to get the red seal pro set.

thats good to know, i have seen different seals from boca, vxb and few other places, and they all have the plain jane black seal ones which is the lowest quality seal and bearing, and then they move up to the high end ceramics, being in the auto parts wholesale side for over 20yrs, i have met federal mogul and timkin bearing/seal reps and talked about them over and over, so i have learned even in the hobby/toy world there is a lot of similarities in how things are made,
shoot i emailed TFE when i seen the chixi prefix's and asked about that, but like any business they wont come out and admit it, but i ran the bearing no# over the internet and came up with all the info, but like i said after paying shipping, then paying return shipping and then the 10% restock fee, what would i have left? a few bucks maybe, but like saying goes "fool me once shame on you ,fool me twice shame on me" wont happen again, most bearings you might run into on a KM/Rovan/HPI will be NTN which is japanese, and NCN which i believe is a indian/persian made bearing,or the dreaded cheapest is the low end chinese bearing which there is over 20 different brands,
i mostly get NTN,i have never had a bearing fail on me,be it a 1/8 scale clutch bearing or the 1/5 scale's none so far,
one last thing and i read this on here what someone does, these are considered sealed bearings either rubber or steel, they are all sealed, the seals are not meant to be taken out so you can clean or repack them with grease once removed the actual sealing of the bearing has been breached, bearings are so cheap that it can be thrown away not up to par and replaced, same thing with screws and nuts.

either way just do some research on what your paying for i know it's a pricey hobby, but somethings you expect to be reliable because the seller said it would are not always what they seem, things break thats expected but things should not fail due to low quality passed off as a high quality.

I had to read what you two wrote twice, there was so much to process :D

Bearings are important tho, I co-designed and made a gravity racer last year, and since winning was important then (I had a point to prove ), I ordered some high-end bearings from the UK for the cart. Won by a country mile, too :cup-1:

If its like you guys say, am probably gonna be researching some more into this. Does anybody know any other good bearing sets aside from the TFE Pro series?
