picking up a FG monster truck 4wd this upcoming week. i plan to do general bashing not hardcore and no racing.

im grabbing the ARTR and fitting with my own radio-servo gear. Any servo reccomendations? im considering the hi tec 5805mg for steering?

should i run dual servos instead of 1? i believe the hi tec 5805mg is oversize and should be plenty. maybe?

should i replace front and rear with universals or just front ?

do i need the front disc brake(cable) for bashing? or can i get by without it for now to start and than grab later

aluminum motor mounts?

should i upgrade the exhaust pipe to start or later

i just want the truck to be solid to start and than from there if i want to add more upgrades i can. i just need the basic must need upgrades.

is your truck the 4wd or 2wd? If 2wd defiantly get alloy motor mounts, alloy spur gear holder, metal pinion and alloy upper rear arms. If you go with the front brakes you'll need alloy steering knuckles to mount them properly.
 
The simplest pholosophy people use is to break, then upgrade.

The 5805MG looks fine.

I'm not that familiar with the 4WD but many of the 2WD basics will apply.

Radio/servo tray - reinforce with extra posts or replace with an alloy or CF tray.
Engine mounts - defo replace with alloy ones.
Diff mounts - consider replacing with alloy ones.
Tuned pipe - easiest way at boosting engine power.
Throttle/brake - favourite for many is the Savox 1256TG - high power, reliable, mid range.

I'm not familiar with the 4WD hubs and driveshafts.

picked up the FG monster truck tonight. too bad its raining or i would have ran first tank. speaking of that how many tanks for break in? i was told one is suffice at 1/4 throttle?

options i added were:

aluminum motor mounts
FG tuned pipe
K&N air filter
Hitec 5805MG for steering servo
Ace DS1015 for throttle
steel spur gear
5100 NiMh receiver pack

radio gear is a KoPropo ex10 'helios' w Spektrum 2.4 ghz

This should be suffice for me now. i will be looking into getting a 'kill' switch as i see its very popular on this forum for 1/5. makes sense.

I'd keep an eye on it if it's alloy - it will get chewed.
Alloy mounts is the only thing I disagree with above - for me it's a must have.
Defo double cover the K&N, unless you're only running on roads. Dirt will get straight in and start scraping the cylinder liner coatings - gouged in no time according to some.

The rest, as and when you need to 'upgrade' (something breaks!!).

i will keep eye on pinion and upgrade to the steel next hobby shop visit. As for the K&N filter??? lol...brutal. whats up with that!. ok, i put outer filter on for offroad and ensure its well oiled and that will be suffice?

yes mate a well oiled foam pre filter will work fine, I have that set up on 1 of mine. The pic is from a marder project car I bought which is now a 4wd bug.

Thats bullshit!

I ride my monsterbeetle XL now for 4 years with a K&N RC-0790 filter.
No problem at all..........
The reasson off the sand in your intake isn't a K&N problem.
But the FG K&N inlet adapter to your carb is the problem!
There are 4 litle windows in the adapter!
Thats the way your grabs sand to the inside.
I see this problem many times,,,,,
The only right inlet adapter is the one from Lauterbacher.

Here is my filter and yo can see,,,,,, no problem at all!

now im really confused!!!! lol

when i purchased the K&N filter RC 0790 i was told that i need to put a different circular adaptor plate provided by FG on as opposed to the 'stock' FG. im assuming this was to ensure a fit as K&N and FG envisioned. The shop owner looked mystified when i asked about the K&N having problems and stated many offroaders use it and have no issues???. im taking the precaution any ways with an 'outerwears' cover but will this even matter. is it only FINE sand particles that get in? we don't got sand in the Big Smoke TO other than the beach!

I do motor tuning and repear motors for a long time.
And I see this many times,,,,,
And thats the problem for engine damage.

For onroad use no problem with this kit, but not my choise!
 
ok. has K&N fixed this? mine does not have those 4 slit/hole/gaps whatever they are called but i definitly understand how very fine particles could seep in. im assuming this is an old issue thats since been fixed by K&N or FG. ??.
 
All the FG adapters for the K&N filters are the same.
I have seen no other or new adapter from FG.
Maybe the one on your car is not from FG.
Look on ebay and you found the right one from lauterbacher.
The venturie from the lauterbacher give the motor more power.:w00t:
