cylinder head removal

Check the cylinder wall for deep scratches . The ring could have put some deep scratches into the cylinder wall if it was pinched between the piston skirt and the cylinder bore. If the cylinder was scored you'll probably need to replace the cylinder sadly. Oh did the piston get damaged at the groove where the ring popped out? A lot of things to look at .

I do see some light scratches ..but l don't have the expertise to ascertain whether or not if replacement is needed.
 
Those little lines in the cylinder head are from the factory. Looks fine to me but anyone else chime in
 
I have seen worse. I would be most concerned with the area around the intake and exhaust ports and especially what looks like rough edges at the transfer ports. Possibility of the plating starting to flake off in these areas

I would give it a try since all it will cost is the price of a new ring. If it doesn't work, at least it didnt cost much to try?

yes that is good logic.
 
Transfer ports are the grooves in the sides of the cylinder head. Try some 1000 grit sandpaper and a little penetrating oil and make sure the edges of these grooves, as well as around the intake and exhaust ports, are a smooth as possible
 
So when you run your finger around the inside of the cylinder on the walls or around the outside of the piston you don't feel scratches . That's good. Unfortunately all the pictures you posted showed the same view of the piston and the same angle of the cylinder. All the cylinder pics were looking at the intake port. None of the exhaust port . Same with the piston. All were looking towards the piston form the fly wheel side.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: The big thing is you shouldn't feel any scratches. You should see the cross hatch pattern in the cylinder walls which is normal.

Don't sand the cylinder walls. You need the cross hatch pattern ( those fine micro scratches) for the ring to seal against, works with the oil in the fuel. If you sand anything just the edges of the port openings.

This is the pic that concerned me. Is it just me or does the thin area between the ports look damaged?

Thats what i meant...just sand the edges and make sure they are smooth
