Hi Guys,

As some of you know, I purchased an ESP engine ported 340 engine in August last year, ive probably used my RC around 3 times in that time due to my work etc, the times ive used it its been great, Today I decided to take it out, started after a couple of pulls with plenty of compression as usual, but after a minute or 2 the engine just stopped dead while running around 1/2 throttle, when I tried to pull the pull start to get it running again, the pull start seems jammed solid then it loosened up allowing me to pull, but it has lost a lot of compression to what there was before. When I pull the pull start now there is little to no resistance!? There are no leaks anywhere around head, spark plug is tight etc, but when I try to start it there’s nothing and like I say, compression is very minimum to what it was so I have a nasty feeling its something internal!?

Ive not yet taken the engine apart as Ive sent a mail to DDM to see what they say. But it defo seems as its something internal, either worn ring or something worse!?

Any ideas?

Could have been a lean seize. Or mechanical failure that scored the piston ring and cylinder. Definitely sounds like something along those lines if you lost compression
I have 2 of those engines they run great when they have compression lol

yeah im thinking its something major :( don't understand how/why as its was running fine, no issues etc, then all of a sudden, just stopped dead :(

Yup, always ran 25:1 ratio with all my largescales, only difference is this is first time ive had a tuned/modded engine! was runnimg fine, then as explained, just stopped dead and thats the outcome. Just waiting for ddm to het back to me before i start stripping it as they may just say to send it back to them as is to inspect etc. Will keep you updated.

25:1 seems to be the standard and that seems heavy on the oil so I would think it is beyond safe.
Especially with today's oil technology that has gotten drastically better over the years.
I am running Amsoil Dominator @ 25:1 myself with VP non ethanol fuel.

I do a lot of hot-rod chainsaw work and much of that we will run at 40:1 and "maybe"32:1 and never any sort of an issue.
When cylinders are removed there is always oil residue in the bottom of the crankcase.

Is there any chance that it went lean maybe from something like a partially clogged jet?
Just thinking out loud.

Keep us posted please. I am really curious what went sideways here.

From that one picture it's a classic lean seize.
I run 40 to 1 in everything 2 stroke I own, doesn't matter if it's a saw, or the 5ive-t.
I'm not quite sure what you're expecting out of ddm. Unless a bearing went kaboom, (not likely, but not unheard of.) It's not a mfg defect.
Well, i purchased it from them so im asking advice from them as they sell the rebuild kits for this engine? Where else would you recommend i go?

And they replied with info for what i need to purchase which is a head kit for the ESP engine i have that is in stock.

Ive always ram 25:1 with no issues, DDM also said 25:1 is the recommended ratio for this engine, so will rebuild it and hopefully wont have this issue again, what caused it in 1st place? no idea. Poor tune maybe, who knows, but whats done is done, i will move on and take it as a learning curve!

I may even rebuild it, test it then sell the engine and maybe opt for the taylor reed v2 that i was going to get originally, mainly as tsylor rc is in uk so getting spares etc wont cost me £30+ for shipping alone 😐

hi buddy,

Yeh seems odd how this has happened :( DDM did say that another cause can be the engine sitting idle for a while, i did this! ..so I can only assume that this is what caused the failure, it was sat idle for about 4-5min before I took off, but I still think this is odd for an engine like this as I know over the years I've had my engines sitting there on idle mid summer for longer periods with no issues :( . I didn't think it would be an issue as temperature here is cold as its mid winter.. but that's the only thing I've done that I can think of that might have caused this.

Anyhow, its been done... rebuild head kit ordered! so will throw that on then decided what I'm to do going forward, keep this engine, or sell it along with a Bartelone pipe for funds towards a Taylor 35 Reed V2! which was my original choice but the V2 weren't available when I was looking for new engine! ..will see :)
