I have a problem and have heard that others have had a similar problem. And thats the pin inside the second gear housing on the 2 speed snapping off. Its the pin that actually makes contact with the shoe which allows it to engage the second gear. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem and what have you done to fix it. Im thinking of taking it to an aluminum welder and have him just weld the lil sucker in place. Whats your solution. Thanks

sounds to me like something is off there, gear or wrong pinion size.
i never had a two speed on my 1/5th fg but i sure as hell would not weld it,these things need to be 100percent accurate down to the smallest increment,i once welded my clutch bell and i mean the stress that puts on other parts is unreal.the smallest bit off at speed will shake like crazy..

thats the same,if you weld that its going to be off and going to damage something else, and thats for sure.
would not be worth damaging an expensive set like that.

a guy here on the forum would help you more he has a two speed fitted, ducky
why not send him a pm.

I have heard of the pins breaking (I assume down to wear and tear) but have never had one go myself. There's always the option of drilling a new hole and inserting a fresh pin if needed, although there is a person on EBay who makes all steel two speed gear sets with a toughened pin (and an additional 3 mounting holes should you need them), however these are expensive and a bit extreme to fix just the pin problem.

Ive broken that same pin about 3 times so far and a guy we run with took his 2 speed out all together because it keeps happening to him. I was thinking of actually just having the weld guy tack weld a spot on the pin so that it cant move and maybe put another one on the opposite side just to keep some sort of balance.

BTW, Ducky, love the avatar. Ride myself but no knee scrapping. Hard to knee drag a Busa.

Have you actually snapped a fresh pin, or is it like worn away before it breaks?

Cheers mate, Busa's a big bike but should be able to knee drag it if you are comfortable riding it. :)

What kind of car do you have?

the main problem could be that this type of gearboxes is best suited on on road cars.
running a car off road will greaten the strain oon the gear box. specialy if you have a monster model with humongus wheels that basicly roips the car apart and does just the same to the gear box.
i have frineds that runs monster models and they strip the stock singel gear spurgear 33 tiems as often as i have done on my Marder.

none of my friens run 2 speed trannnys on their cars. one of the tried but sold the fiddlesticker realy fast. it did not work as great as he hoped.

that extra speed when the 2. gear kicks in is great as long as i works. but you look like at big TOOL . when the cars kicks in second gear and the only thig that happens is the engine revign hard and the car looses its speed becaus the gearboks is fiddlesticked.

thers iss a saying, that asys KISS. i have it written on the wall over my work space.
KISS= KEEP IT SIMPEL STUPID.

I have had the pin break problem in the past...snapped a couple and the ripped one out so it destroyed the hub....there is an easy fix though.
remove the old pin, get an fg shock pin as in picture (they're hard steel and much fatter), drill out the hole in the hub bigger so it's a little smaller than the smooth part of the pin, press the pin in and cut off the remaining part with the threads with a dremmel cut off wheel....job done. Since I did this I've not broken a pin...it's wearing a bit now (about half thru but still works) so it's time to replace it.

I love the 2 speed in my baja, it's nice to have low and high end gearing tunability. I've had mine for a year now and don't understand some peoples negative attitude toward them, maybe they should run one first ...easy to adjust..reliable & durable with the pin fix and many ratio options.

And crazy beetle don't forget young kids browse these forums so less of the f word please:nono:

Nice Idea any chance you could do a how-to with some photos for us folks?:cool2:

I'll whip the gears off later on today, trying to get my rampage back together to go for a bash, and post the pin mod...it's time for a new pin now anyways....I forgot to say that I used green loctite also on the pin for insurance

MOOMAN, thats a great idea. I run a Baja and a sportline but the Baja is set up for onroad. It has a modded 27.2 but that shouldnt continue to snap the pin.

Im going to go ahead and order some of those pins and try that because I'd hate to take the 2 speed off. I like the way it sounds when it shifts and gets that second burst of speed.

where can two speeds be got?
hobbythek where i get all my parts don't supply them as they say too troublsome.

they have had too many complaints back when they used to stock them.

maybe from people that just couldnt fix or didnt know about them,i don't know.

cheers ducky.

i think any two speed appers to be a lot faster in every department, even your one ducky seems to have very good off the line acceleration and as for jazrx's two speed, need i say anymore.he has it set up good.

other than that havnt seen many more of them
i am happy enough with my own set up,if i knew though that two speeds were a bit more relibale i would prob invest.

Mine is the standard MT gearing on first but a 4 tooth increase on 2nd gear :D Although I do have the 50 tooth diff gear so lose out a little, but gain a little more pick up. Need to try it on tarmac to see how well it really goes.

so you must have a differnt layshaft pinion set up so too?

what ratio do two speed come as,14/48 or what?

are they a big job to fit and are they to be had in steel?

I have a 14t on the layshaft
50t diff
48/16 - 1st gear
44/20 - 2nd gear

I changed first from 46 to the 48.
Easy to fit and there are after market steel units available, virtually doubles the price though.

do you know something,i don't know is all steel a good thing either,we need to consider rotation mass, and weight, makes huge impact.

i think fg set out with the intention of plastic car parts with weight saving in mind.

ane even though i have serious upgrades now, it was still fair quick in standard trim(light as a feather)

i love the all alloy look, makes for a very stable ride but i would love to see what way my one would run in standard trim with the o neills and jetpro.

i think i would be shocked..
maybe the plastic two speed is easier for engine to turn, less rotational mass in turn faster turning speeds, quicker rpm..
