Ok so after the recent outing I had my first 2-speed failure and lost the pin, however the pins don't actually break but tend to pull themselves out of the alloy gear carrier, probably because of the loads involved with the big wheels and jumps etc.

So decided to modify them as mentioned in a previous thread using the toughened pin from the suspension Suspension Pin Link, but this time using the screw part to hold it in place and prevent it pulling out again.

You can see in the first picture that the actual carrier has bent from the forces involved.

This is the suspension pin I'm using.

Here I've drilled out the carrier and tapped it for the thread.

Pin going in...

4.gif

Pin screwed in (would recommend thread lock).

5.gif

The pin fully inserted and the protruding pin on the inside, now I just need to cut the excess off.

A few modified spares to keep me going.

The bonus of this is when the pin wears out I can just unscrew it and screw another in to replace it.

I did this mod a while back but didn't cut a thread...I wanted to leave as much meat in the hole (:clown:) as possible cos of the tendency to bend the boss. I just drilled it a tad smaller for an interference fit and green loctited it in.

yup i tapped the hole out to 4mm and used a A.P bolt from hexcrews.com

works a treat . ill take pics when i install the 4wd kit ... mmm 4wd and 2 speed = fun

are you supposed to hear the gear shift? i had put my own back together but not hearing shift

and does speed give you more low and mid compared to 1 speed gear, i have a 40/24 right now , and if i put in a 2 speed will it give me more low and top end than this 1 speed combo?

you can hear the gear shifting, perhaps you need to adjust it slightly. Best bet is to wind the spring in so you're definitely stuck in 1st, then wind it out a bit at a time until you hear it shift.

You can choose to either have more speed, or more acceleration, but not normally the best of both unless you buy your own gears and mix and match. :)
