So I am learning more and more about how King Motors wants your money, to hell with assembly details. I pulled my outer air filter cover to check the inner filter, guess what? Dry!!! I know this is partially my fault, I should have checked the filter for oil when I got the buggy but every other r/c car I have ever bought had a pre-oiled filter on it, figured this would be the same way.

Anyways, I took the filter, adapter, carb and base off the engine and cleaned everything up good. There was a bit of dirt in the choke area of my carb, some carb spray and its all clean and back together. I cleaned the filter and set it aside to dry. Grabbed the spare filter they supplied, oiled it up and I should be good to go now.

don't be like me, check your air filter for oil. How often do ylu guys check yours? I am thinking every tank is going to be the norm from now on, I don't want anymore dirt in this thing!

Good to hear you caught that.

I've always been under the assumption that anything labeled "RTR" should be read as "ready to reassemble".

LOL Vertiviper, yeah I guess as long as I have been in the hobby (since 1986) I should know this by now. I am used to running Traxxas stuff and the filters have ALWAYS been oiled on new RTR vehicles. Guess thats what happens when "Taiwan Timmy" doesn't care about quality, only quantity.

It does actually run better now that I have cleaned the carb, filter and oiled it. I ran another tank through it today and she is still putting a HUGE smile on my face. I tweaked the needles a little more and am happy with where they are. I am lacking some bottom end, but I am blaming this on the 23cc motor. I am planning on putting the DDM 28.5cc big bore kit on soon. Need some O/T at work to pay for it though. LOL

On a side note, while I was out driving UPS stopped by and brought me parts, new Proline Desert Rat body and some Proline Badlands tires, will have to review them this weekend and paint up the body. My local hobby store closed last winter, so I am forced to drive 60 miles to the next closest one or order parts online. The paint had to be ordered from another place, so it will be here probably friday. I have a new stock HPI body on the way as well.

The Desert Rat is getting painted Lime Ice Green and the stock HPI body is getting painted like an American Flag. Both should be stunning, will post pics when they are finished.

yes matt my filter was dry too but i oiled it in the beginning on the first check of the baja before running it. i had totally forgot that it was dry till i saw your post. i now run hpi foam on mine with k&n filter oil

Nope, no 2 stroke oil to get you started on your first tank either.

its best to run a good synthetic two stroke, as for filter oil motox stuff is the best i use pj1 super tacky is good comes in a spray can, see you come from iowa my favorite band come from there slipknot:w00t::w00t:

Slipknot rocks! As far as the filters being well protected without oil, nope. There was alot of dirt in the choke area that had gotten through. There wasnt any past that in the carb, but if its there I am afraid some dust did make it through my engine. Runs fine, will inpect it when I put the DDM 28.5 kit in.

Smoked the clutch today, I guess the Proline Badlands just had too much grip for it. Time for a HPI clutch.

If you think that is bad I have seen the inner filters made out of the same material as the outers, which imo is not nearly as good, and on the same car I was having trouble getting it to start so I checked the plug and it was dry as a bone, and i pulled the carb and the bolt thaat hold it on had missed the hole in the gasket and the gasket was blocking the fuel from the motor.

How long have you owned your KM? If you haven't already I'd strongly suggest you go over all the screws and threadlock any that screw into metal. They're usually very loose from the factory. Unfortunately it's the nature of the beast when you're buying something from China. My Rovan had a ton of loose screws.

The assembly of the KM car was actually pretty good, although they don't seem to be fans of thread lock in China. I have changed that though! LOL

I think warning is a strong word. I think it would be understanding to oil your filter. When I buy a UNI or K&N filter for my auto or motorcycle they come dry. Common sense has long since been lost I think.

And as far a Lock-tite, my FG came with the dreaded looses screws and NO lock tite, nor would I expect it.
