generally speaking ......NO... if you had 2 cars and pulled the same engine out and swapped them about for the test then no...but it would be only just..as it takes some extra power from the engine to turn all the 4wd components...

But saying that...do a lap of a course and the 4wd should be quicker as you can run tighter lines and have more grip also getting power down earlier in the corner
where the 2wd would just slide about..(but thats half of the fun.)

But it could be made quicker if you want to spend on it

again there is so much you can do if you have 2 cars and 2 engines..the state of tune could make the 4wd alot faster. its all down to tune and money in the end...If you had enough money and time anybody could build any thing....look at VAS building the british sports car...just because you cant get a company to make one don't mean you cant make one yourself

No doubt somebody else will come along with a better explanation for you soon.

+1 Wez, there is more friction to overcome in the 4wd drive train but also the std gearing is different on the layshaft, 14T on 4wd and 16T on 2wd so you are not comparing like for like anyway. Can you make the 4wd faster in a straight line? If you have deep pockets you can stick a fully tuned motor in there that will make it an awesome beast and being 4wd you will have more chance of getting the power down.

MazdaMike, most of the guys on here generally just bash off road or do on road course driving.
Your in NY and I would think your looking to set up a FG to drag race with us in Floyd Bennett in Brooklyn, I could be wrong, but I am taken a guess here....
If that is the case, you already know what we do..
We run on a full 1/4 scale quarter mile track (330 feet) not 265ft which is actually 5th scale,, but.
Most of the guys do run just the 2wd FG platforms successfully, I have had the first car to break into the (4.3 second club) with a 2wd FG drag car, one of our guys (NIck) has gotten his 4wd FG into the 4.4 second ET area last year and with some changes (pictured below) he hopes to break into the 4.2 ET's with it. (FG 4wd with wet shot NOS)
I too hope to be the first to get into the 4.2's but it is not an easy task..
These cars are all in the high 70's low 80 mph area on our 330ft track from a dead stop, we don't do 600 feet speed runs.
Any info you need on set up, you can find on the club website rc burnout.
They have the race event schedule listed on there site, also any help I can offer, just ask.

I will be starting on a Baja 4wd project, stuffing a Skopod 62cc in it, need to make some changes to the big motor mount and pipe and it should slide in place.
Set of some custom gearing and off to the track we go.

Thanks and see you at the line...............
