Hi all,

I just purchased a new CPI tuned pipe from DDM online for my Redcat MT. I have heard stories of the mounts snapping off and so before I put the pipe on I'd like to know of the mods you've guys have done to keep the pipe on in one piece. So far I've bought some rubber washers off eBay and was thinking of stacking 2 or 3 together through the bolts so it'll absorb some of the shock that would have otherwise went to the pipe.

Another thing I wanted to know was what size bolts are used to mount the pipe to the engine head as the ones supplied are too long?

When I received my pipe there was some sand inside it and on the outside, I believe I got it all out but should I be concerned about this? I've emailed CPI directly and not had a response yet.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I've been through the good and bad with my CPI pipe. I am happy to say that I've got it perfect at this point. The one major thing you may run into is where the pipe mounts to the fan cover on the engine is probably the weakest point and will almost always break. I went through 2 fan covers until I bought a aluminum cover and not a problem since. It's an investment, but well worth it. The next item is the piece of aluminum that mounts the rear pipe mount to the shock tower. It will only last a couple of runs because of the shock tower flexing. I have made a new one from 90 degree angled aluminum with great results (and pretty easy to make). Your on the right track with the rubber washers/grommets it will help with the flex of the shock tower & motor vibration. As for the bolt size, they are 5x12 mm. I would just get a bunch of replacement bolts & washers in the 4,5,& 6 mm range, they will come in handy. You will have to experiment with length depending on the thickness of the grommet you use.

I wouldn't worry about the sand, that is just leftover from the sandblasting process. Be sure to mount the header first, then mount the pipe. This makes things a lot easier to install. Here is a related thread with pics of what I've done..

With these mods done, I have flipped, rolled, jumped and bashed my truck without any pipe issues since. Enjoy!

Do you mind taking some pictures of where your pipe is connected to the engine cover so I can see it clearly, thanks.

I also have a cpi pipe and have not mounted it yet. Do you have to mount it to the fan cover? Thanks for the awesome advice so far. It looked kinda tricky when I dry fit the pipe.

thanks,

Yes, you will need to mount to the fan cover or else the pipe will twist. Hope this helps.

Here is an overview of the mounting. As you can see even angled aluminum will bend a little after some big flips.
