Figured I'd just go ahead and start a specific thread regarding what all performance mods are available.

I have air cleaner, a Walbro 998 carb, DDM Dominator pipe, just ordered an 8k clutch. Just learned about the light weight flywheel.

So next step is porting? My knowledge of engines is more than the average gear head, but when it comes to 2 strokes I'm still a rookie. Usually when building an engine, you spend time and $ in the heads to get the most hp gains (larger valves, porting intake runners and exhaust ports, and for a cheap/fast way to gain compression, just get a head with a smaller combustion chamber.

But in a 2 stroke, is there a simple way to modify the engine without having to completely tear it down? Is there any head work that could be done that would make a difference?

All the magic comes from the porting in the cylinder. It would require a full tear down.

If you go to model gas boats .com there is a thread that is step by step for porting and piston mods. I have been modding my own for years now. And yes big difference in the power they make just make shure you put a good pipe on also..

Most all the porting I have done was on boat applications 26cc., but I did the same porting on a 30cc for my XB with less exhaust timing to keep the torque up and did not install a head gasket to increase the combustion pressure and it runs great. Just my two cents........

This is the kind of info I'm looking for!! Thanks guys! I can't say I know a whole lot about 2 strokes. Just to clarify, you can change the timing by trimming the piston skirts and porting the exhaust port? I have a the DDM Dominator pipe, and did notice the pipe port is more square than oval. Already thought about porting out the pipe flange for I noticed it definitely didn't match the exhaust port.

My mechanical knowledge with regular 4 stroke is above average but this 2 stroke business is a whole different animal! Here's a pic of the 550+ 383 stroker I built many years back and my most recent build, an 06' Yamaha Roadstar Warrior

Nice ride and bike!!! I'm working on my lowrider, I have a 1964 Pontiac Catilina. I put a 3 pump hydraulic system, swivel bucket seats and in the process of putting a Chevy 350 motor in. Here is a some pics.

Those still work good. Long as your not trying to run the crap out of it in Arizona summer heat the lightened flywheel is fine
No worries there.
