I decided a "mid cost" receiver should function good without being too complicated for a person who is "lightly" into the hobby. . All the bells and whistles of anything higher on the chain will be useless to me. I don't think I would be able to tell the difference since I have very little experience

I decided futaba because it looked nice in the pic,,,,,,,,:D

I was surprised that there are no opinions of "easy to use" and "easy to set up" and things like that,,,only brand loyalty seems to come thru in reading about futaba vs spektrum. The one thing that helped was the futaba seems to have more range. That was a welcome fact to hear.

On the killer thingy. I also bought a 4wd traxxas Summit which has a radio that I thought I would replace with the futaba. It has switches that lock in the front and rear differentials. I am thinking that will use up my other 2 channels on the 4pl,,,and I would not be able to use the V1 then?

What would you use your other 2 channels for? A kill switch wont work on an electric vehicle.

On a gas large scale this is usually how it's done.
Ch1 Steering
Ch2 Throttle Brake
Ch3 Kill Switch
Ch4 LED light controller?

That's all you'd need. There's no kill switch for electric cars.

(smacks himself in the head) alright ,,i get it now i think. I can set it up in memory for different vehicles because the kill switch goes on the car,,,and KILL SWITCH DOESN'T WORK ON ELECTRIC LOL,,, I told you i didn't know what i am doing with the radios...

A Killer Bee kill switch only works on a RC car with an ignition coil. We also make one for Nitros. The Bumble Bee. http://www.killerrc.com/products/nitro_killswitch.php

But when it comes to electric cars all you can do is set the failsafe options that are already built into the radio. Make the car apply the brakes during a radio glitch. This is explained in the radio owners manual.
