If you're talking about for when you put your engine together I would just use your favorite 2 stroke oil . Granted I've never put together a 2 stroke engine so what do I know. :)
Yes, but my thought process is, gear oil is much thicker than 2t oil (I'm pretty sure) so it would give better protection for the first start,

+1 i used my motul 2 stroke when i did my head and ring change(y)
When its neat( not mixed ) it pretty thick.....sure thats what most people use
 
The go-to assembly lube for performance engine builders is a 50/50 mixture of straight 30W oil and STP oil treatment. ZDP ( Zinc Dithiophosphate ) is the desirable protective agent within oils . You can also use Lubriplate white lithium grease. All's you're trying to accomplish is initial startup protection of the fresh metal surfaces. Only exception to this is on 4 stroke engine camshaft lobes. For those you want to use a moly-specific type of camshaft assembly lube.
