Hi all ,
Having seen Barry (1275mini) flying his Heli at Deeside recently , and having always had an interest in them, I think its time for me to ask Santa if I have been a good enough boy to get one !!:lol:

Obviously I ain't quite ready for anything like the one Barry had (much as I would like one !!) but I fancy an electric one which is suitable for the beginner.

I'm looking for one that is ready to fly from the box , roughly around the £100 mark. It needs to be tough, and easy to work on , and also easy to get spares / upgrades for.
As my house is only quite small , I'm after something that is suitable for outdoor flight (in calm conditions obviously)

The names that I can remember that have already been mentioned to me are .... The Esky Honeybee V2 , Eflite blade CX2 (?) , Eflite blade MX2 (?)

In a nutshell , I know absolutely nothing at all about Helis but would really quite like to have a go ! (Especially with the way things are heading on the Deeside club front !!)

Soooooooo...... any opinions , experience , suggestions , ideas etc etc would be greatly appreciated !!

I have had a few heli's and the one thing i can tell you is do not try to run before you can walk, these things are so complex and yet varied in the amount of channels etc. it can be mind boggling.

The esky honey bee fixed pitch (FP) V2 is a good heli and being 4 channel it gives you all the movement ranges to act like a real heli, any more than 4 channels and it gets more difficult to fly any less than 4 channels and it limits the heli's ability to mimick the real thing.

Ground effect is something that will unsettle all heli's but the general rule is the smaller the heli the less stable it is. The one heli that goes against this argument is the Blade MSR. For beginners this thing is unbeatable as is its bigger brother the 120SR. take a look at Kings Lynn Models, they have great deals on them and it's where i bought my MSR RTR.

Other onliine stores to consider are Buzz Flyer, HeliGuy and Fastlad.

Non of the heli's mentioned are really suitable for outdoor flying but they will get your skill level up pretty quickly. The MSR and 120SR are very easy to set up and fly, once trimmed they will hover with both hands off the TX.
 
Hi mate, + 1 to above... I would suggest to get a flight sim first like the phoenix.... Best sim out there and it's what I learnt on when I built my t-rex 600e, first time I hovered easy....
 
yup, a flight sim all the way... everytime you tap that space bar to restart you just saved a wad of cash.

I started on realflight. it's a very good program too and can be found fairly cheap for a used setup. even comes with a radio that plugs in. and there's a flight instructor program built in that starts you on take offs, right up to complex maneuvers and shows what stick inputs and such are required.

I had a sceadu evo 50 up and I was still very new. never did an autorotation yet, never landed nose in before. I had practiced autos on the sim. I was power climbing and dropping, pounding the throttle and feeling the blades wash hit me (dude it's really a rush). I stalled my heli at about 25-30 feet up and had no blade speed. if it wasn't for the sim training I wouldn't have known to flip the top right switch, go negative pitch (which drops faster) to get some blade speed then do an auto about 5 feet from ground. cheap csm gyro and the thing spun 180 as soon as I flared to land. I pulled off a nose in auto my first time and nearly poop myself.. not a cheap heli either and only had it airborne for what 12 mins haha

mini helis are fine indoors. the dual rotor helis are so easy to fly if you get in trouble just leave both sticks at center and pull your fingers away. it'll hover... but they get boring pretty fast. the best indoor is the hirobo sky robo. it has adjustments and weights to take it from super mild to very agile. and the blades are foam so you don't break stuff. just buy an extra box of a and b blades right away hehe

the bigger the heli the easier it is to see and more stable to fly. get a mini for indoor and a 30-50 size for outdoor. stay away from fixed pitch helis. hit and miss and extremely aggravating to fly.

I did really want an outdoor capable heli, but I hear what you are all saying with regards to learning to walk before I run !!

Sounds like a good idea to get a good indoor heli to learn with before I take the plunge on a bigger outdoor variety.

Going to have a look into the blade MSR to start with, and possibly the 120SR too :D

This is totally different to the mo mo car game !!:lol:
 
Hope this doesn't mean you'll be staying in with the heli rather than bash the f##k out of the baja @deeside.
I'd love a Heli myself though, think i'll wait and see if any of the heli club have something cheap, you never know.

Nah mate, the Baja will still be getting a regular thrashing !!

Just always had an interest in the Helis, but never really did anything about !

That blade MSR looks well cool. Just been watchin quite a few vids on the toob of them flyin outdoors too. Its a small copter but looks very manoueverable , fast and nimble :w00t:

Well ive been doing a lot of rooting round on the tinterweb and watching of vids on yootoob..... and I think I'm leaning towards the Eflite blade 120 SR.

All the Eflites seem to get great reviews, and the MSR is raved about for a beginner heli. But I like the 120 SR being a little bigger , and, from what I can gather, a little more capable of outdoor flying in calm weather, yet also small enough to fly indoors.

So what do we reckon heli people ? Is the blade 120 SR a good bet for some indoor and a little outdoor flying , to get me started in the world of the heli ?????
 
Hi Pete, I have the mSR and can vouch for it's ease of setup and getting beginners into flying. I have seen the 120SR flying and it looks identical in the way it's constructed and it can be adapted just like the mSR with upgrade DX6i tx etc. The one thing I would be wary of is the 120 will be heavier and therefore more susceptible to breaking when crashed. The one thing about the mSR is it's ability to get straight back up and fly again. The only thing you will ever need to upgrade on the mSR is the blade holder, the plastic one is weak but the alloy upgrade on mine has taken plenty of hits and never breaks. the blade holder on the 120SR is the same design as the mSR (i think) so may be worth buying the upgrade holder if you go for it.

Both are a good choice though.

Well..... RC pistop in Southport (near me) is doin the blade 120 SR RTF but with a Spekky DX5 Tranny instead of the standard tx for £139.

Think this is gonna be my choice. Might try and get down tomorrow. See if Santa (the missus) will secure one for me !!!

Been watchin loads of vids of it on yootoob !! Looks ACE!!!

CAN'T WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Got to be honest Pete I don't think the DX5 is much cop. Like Trebor has stated get the DX6i.

Best bet is either go with the 120SR with stock controller or get the upgraded one that has the DX6i included. Like I said the Kings Lynne Models does this deal at good prices.
