HI All,

A couple of friends and I are going to get into 1/5 scale racing (at least amongst ourselves and maybe a few other friends).

We have a fairly large and open area to set up a basic track (no real hills or jumps) .... basically a large field and we will set up some cones and 4" black drain pipes to help show the track areas .... The course is not super tight and has a fair amounts of long straight runs for simplicity sake (straights as long as about 300 feet).... basically sprints out 300 feet u turn come back and repeat 4 times and the last sprint back has 10 cones equally spaced to slalom around on the way back ....

Given this and an agreed to $1500 limit on spending what is my best bet for a 1/5 scale gasser to win this ?

FWIW I already have a Baja 5B with locked rear , 30.5 cc engine and 2 speed that cost me $500 used so in theory I could mod that with a budget of $1000 for mods

OR would I be better off starting with a losi 5t clone (OR OTHER) platform and going from there ?

I am almost leaning towards just modding what I have since it is light compared to the 5T and since the course is wide open maybe there is no advantage to 4 WD and all the extra weight / friction of it ?

Anyways, any thoughts as to what I should run / do to win ?

Thanks for any and all help / opinions.

Andrew

I’d also go with a losi 5t. Hpi baja 5t with the right moda can be fun too. Cheaper but 2wd. Different riding style

Thinking more about it a baja is going to be a driver's race and 5ive t would even the playing field and could be more interesting.
Personally to had many of them. I found the 5ive way more interresting for racing on a track and the HPI baja 5T funnier to bash on a field with bumps and small jump. The 2wd make it less returnable.

HI All,

Thanks for the replies ...

Based on a video I saw on You Tube ( I can't remember the channel but I think it was something like two mechanics garage or something like that)...

I think I may end up staying on the Baja platform and just modding it .....

(in the video they were running a Baja against a couple 4 WD vehicles and the Baja was out running them all .... supposedly that was due to its light weight and lack of friction from the 4 WD .....).

To save $$ off the race budget I'll probably try looking for a used Talor 35 or larger and a pipe and spend the extra $$ on bigger tires (to improve top end speed and since larger tires run better / faster over rough surfaces .... the same reason mountain bikes went to 29ers and Trophy trucks went to larger tires over the years .... I used to work in a warehouse years ago and a small pebble would stop a pallet jack tires in its tracks whereas a cart with larger tires would continue rolling easily ....

I'm looking forward to kicking some ass! lol

PS - other than tires (what would you choose ? ... I want larger diameters for the reason outlined above) .... what other mods are necessary or recommended?

(so far the only additions to the car (before I got it were 2 speed , and supposedly he added the 30.5 cc engine in place of whatever stock was (it is still a Chinese engine tho) .... may be an aluminum rear shock tower (unless that part is aluminum to start with?).

I did buy a stainless front chassis brace (like a skid plate) and mechanical front brakes off Amazon already but have not installed it yet ....

Thanks
