Hi, wanted to pick your brains... i have the troublesome brake layshaft issues and i think i'm finally getting it sorted.. on the brake layshaft (d Gear) when its all in place the whole layshaft from d gear through to the diff gear moves as one piece about 2-4mm (roughly) either way forward and back so the d gear either overlaps each edge of the c gear by the same mm.. Now is this ok or should it be tight and inline with the c gear at all times?? (hope i've explained it ok if not will post a couple of pics to show what i mean)

2-4mm is a lot. When you say whole the shaft is moving do you mean the center pinion gear is also moving in & out that much too? If so, thats just too much play for a bevel gear set up and will cause premature wear.

Make sure the hex of both shafts are fully into the brake hub then tighten those set screws while the shafts in place riding on the bearings. This will help them run as true as possible then try using the square drive gear hub to eliminate the extra play.

Check the play at the pinion/bevel gears. might need to shim in to get full contact. I had to make a petty thick shim for mine.

Yea, thats not good. IMO really shouldn't be any. Try what i said. Tighten the gear hub last. Push hub against gear plate while pulling shaft outward and tighten set screw. A tic of play is ok. you don't wanna put any preload on the bearings.

I'm workin on a better set up for the brake hub. My TT has been torn down for a couple months because the hex got slightly strip. Got a couple new ones, but the run out on the shaft is just terrible. Worst part of the drive train.
