Just got the 5T but I found this????

diff's don't need oil like that anyway, iwould drill a tiny hole in middle of diff if you can and fill it up with some greese,

i wouldnt send it back over that.
its nothing to get too worked about.
diffs DO NEED OILS. grease is for your back-hoe and bucket loader. diff oil is for the diff

Holy crap you guys, raptor checked out about 6 posts ago. HPI Bajas come with differential oil for a reason or in this case maybe it didn't. In any case it is grand to experiment with something you have had for while but this is a new toy. Hey Raptor if you really hate the car I'll give you $600.00 for it. It is broken and made in China for god sakes!:lol::lol::lol:

they are supposed to be 1/2 full to the cross pins with 1000w diff oil from the factory, BUT to date, maybe 10 units have had more than a light coating of diff oil.

DC2, the Baja diff is quite different than the FG Harm, Horemann type diffs. they have a oring seal, but most just don't get properly oiled from teh factory, or the oil leaks out before the diff is fully assembled leaveing a mess inside the box like it just couldnt hold it the last mile to get to the bathroom.

i read you post, and fully understood what you ment. and while that would work. you would still not want to drill the case. one is made of plastic adn could be tough to get a good plug to seal up, and the other is made of thin cast aluminum, which offers very little if any meat to tap the hole with threads.

i know grease is the way most fg bashers do it. but most of the hardcore raceing guys still run diff fluids.

i should of been more clear in my post above, finishing by saying there is not a good way to drill and plug a hole on the hpi diffs.

no thanks Hawaii, i'll keep it or sell more than $600. I assumed its the diff, but wasnt sure. Why would anyone want to put a hole so that it would have more chance to leak??? Im new to 5th scale but not new to cars. I have been into elec. and nitro for many yrs so perhaps im not a newbie after all. Wheather its 5th or 1/8 same principle applies.

Also Im not really fond of stuff/$hit thats made in China. HPI is a Japanes comp. who subs out their brand to company in overseas, most likely in China. don't we all hear something at least once a week about tainted products in food or other goods thats made in China? I love the hobby but I don't buy stuff thats made in China. I love Mugen since its made in Japan and the quality is second to none. Same w/ Team associated. Losi however is not up to par w/ TA and Mugen.. Im kinda getting off the topic here,,,,, but

SO I SHOULD REPLACE THE DIFF OR CHECK IT RIGHT? i thought it might be oil from the engine or something but there was a lot so i figured it was the diff. i'll check it out. Thanks for the info guys..

i would check it right. open it up, make sure the cross pins didnt break ect..
its likely just low on oil. if its an rtr, you will do well to replace the stock diff cases with either the SS/5T diff case, or the Turtle Racing Diff saver cases (they utilize a modified stock case with a pair of billet case covers that bolt together on the modified diff case and hold the entire assemlby nice and snug. ive been running my TR Diff setup for almost 2 yrs without haveing to open it up. one motor i ran was a RP 28.5, and i know have an ESP 27.2 running it.
The modified Stock Diff case IS INCLUDED with the new TR Diff Saver Cases, and can also be purchased seperatly should you ever need to replace the tr modified stock cases.

"T" it's a brand new out of the box 5T. The puddle was in the box when he opened it.:(

raptor50,
You should contact HPI immediately. This will cover any warranty claim you may have. Make sure they know of your situation 1st.
Then take it apart and dissect the differential. They probably didn't tighten the bolts or the two filling grubs or they pinched the seal and its not set right, but it could be that the diff is one of the cracked ones that have been seen before and is leaking. There were a few tutorials here but there links have been broken? I will check on those for you.

trip, timmah and kryptoite i was just giving my opinion here on this and maybe we all have our own prefernces, from where all the local lads run here in co cork and waterford in the tracks they don't use anything in the diffs at all just some light greese, simply because they are hardned steel and wear very little, and as for diff balance and running they just measure out the amount they put in for a tight or loose diff, maybe not the most accurate way but accurate enough for what they need, and if you wanted to wear down these hardned diff gears by just running the truck normally i can guarantee you would have a lot of tyres worn down first.

but i agree with kryptonite maybe my info was misguiding for this man as he bought his machine new and wants it the way it should be.

and trip if you read the comments i was simply saying to timmah that i DID NOT tell him to drill a hole in the diff to put in oil,i said that i would drill a hole and put in some greese.

fairenough if this man is running in a track he would need oil in the diff but for where he is going to be running it im sure some greese would be perfect for the job.....

from my experience with sealed diffs and oil they bloody always leak!!
most of my old nitros were introdused with upgraded diffs WITH GREESE simply because they leaked oil too much.

just my opinion, but then again i aint a baja fan

but as timmah said they have o rings for diff oil so just put more in and seal up and away you go.make sure you seal up good though if you do diy on it,as they are mothers for leaking.

no disrespect lads to anybody elses opinions here:clown:

no bother kryptonite

i was just thinking it is fairly sad though all the same that this young fella buys brand new and it starts leaking diff oil,all the same very poor product!

thats cool DC2. different products, different uses, different setups. i thought i understood what you were saying to do, and obviously it willl need to be plugged. but i don't thing there is a good way to do that on the baja diffs. i think it would lead to issues very soon aferwards. not the grease but the drilling of the hole to fill from.

its likely a diff oil spot from sloppy assebly. they most have very little oil form the diff. instad of 1/2 full as they should be per the manual. but its a common thing, and anyone thats been around rcs long enough understand RTR means Ready To Rebuild. lol

best buy an fg then, all their parts are mage in Germany...99% in house including all the aluminum upgrades...fg's still break though...

:offtopic: I slammed my FG into the side of my Neon R/T last year at over 40mph and all I did was scuff up the hood of my truck! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I beat the poop out of the rocker panel of my Neon!! lol...

The moral of the story is, the FG's are built like tanks! Way to go Germans!!! :celebrate:

Trip..

just opened up the 5T on Sat. morning at 6 like if it was christmas to find out that something leaked in the truck to the bottom of the chassis. Seems like diff oil, since it only appeared at the back of the truck. I read some that diff was dry in some and wondering if thats my case as well. HMMM.. they should make this a kit so I don't have to apart/fix the stuff that shouldhave been done in first place..

Your kidding me right!!!!! If you bought a rtr version and expect it to be bullet proof then you have the wrong idea. These rtr models are massed produced so fast that alot of the times small things like that will need immediate attention. I'm not trying to cut you down but you need to expect that sometimes your going to have to fix a few minor details. I just bought the new HPI Baja v2 and I had the same experience you did, diff fluid all over the place in the box. So I simply tore it apart and added some upgraded bearings, thicker diff fluid and some better grease and now I won't probably have any problems for a while. I mean come on, thats half the fun of these tihngs is tearing them down and working on them!!! Good luck to ya!!!

yup, i probably have to open the diff and find out its missing some diff oil.. well i paind over 1200 for it so I thought it was gonna be assembled by Eistein but I guess I was wrong.. Its no big deal but I just wanted to kjnow where that oil was coming from.. thanks..

RTR means Ready To Rebuild. lol
Isn't that the truth.

Not a bad question. I only say to call HPI so that if you need a part they WILL send it to you. You are covered and I know your pain it sucks to put forward the cash and have to wrench it out of the box. I did the same thing on all my rtr models from all the manufactures. Good luck and post up the final situation.:clover:
