To all the XBE owners who have the Leopard 5692, what Kv to you have, how many Lipos are you running, and on what ESC?

I currently have a CC 1717 in my XBE, and I am having a hard time keeping the temps down. I am running 6S. Since I am having trouble keeping temps down on my CC 1717, I am figuring I need a stronger motor. The way I drive I am draining my 6S 8000mAh (2 6S 4000mAh in parallel) setup in ABOUT 10 min.

I had the stock ESC until recently. It suddenly lost the ability to accurately tell cut off voltage, so I bought a Momba XL2 thinking it would be a stronger, and better all round ESC.

I was thinking about getting the Leopard 5692 1340Kv. From what I have gathered on the Forum, it sounds like the 5692 is a pretty stout motor. Someone had commented that it runs significantly cooler than the CC 1717.

I have been told now that the XL2 ESC will not last long with the Leopard 5692 1340Kv running on 6S (too many amps). I was also told that with the XL2 I need to run the 5692 1090kV on 8S if I want the ESC to hold up.

So is the XL2 not a strong ESC on 6S? Do you need to run 8S with it to reduce the Amps?

Any advice would be appreciated.

First up, the higher the voltage the less work the motor has to do, in other words less amp draw, so running 8s is your best bet with the xbe, as the 1717 getting hot, is it the older green can model or the black can out of the new traxxas xo-1. The new black can spools up quicker and has a shorter rotor so it doesn't get as hot. I had a leopard 5692 1090kv it ran pretty cool on 8s, I think the 1340kv is the sweet spot though, just watch your gearing, to tall and the motor will get hot.....I tried a neu1527 geared 14/45 it had heaps of power right up to the point it got to hot and shaft started to slip inside the rotor/magnet housing....I'm currently running with a 1000kv turnigy 1/5 sacle motor from hobbyking, it runns cool and I can gear it 16/41 without it breaking a sweat.....Not bad for a $70 motor......They are on backorder now though, it's basicly the same as the TP motor from fightercat just half the price.......

bigfol, thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

By the way, what ESC are you running? Have any issues with what you are running.

Also, what batteries are you running, and what run times are you getting.

I am going to look at making the switch to 8S, but not sure how big (mAh) to try and go on the batteries. About the biggest 4S I've seen is 5000mAh. I currently run 6S 8000mAh an only get about 10min.

I'm running with a castle xl2 esc, if you are going to go down that path, make sure you run a separate bec and the castle cap bank, that way you won't have any problems, the internal bec can't handle the the amp draw required by the big servo that is used in the xbe IMO. I'm currenty running 2 x 6s 5000mah turnigy nano's (10,000mah total) from hobbyking and getting about 35mins run time, when I run 8s they are 2 x 4s 5000mah turnigy nano's and get only about 15mins run time all depends on how hard you run it, I guess....

I would recommend the following as a step up from stock:

Stock ESC

Leopard 5692 1340kv

2x 6s in parallel

CC XL2

Leopard 5692 1090kv

2x 4s in series

You can also look for a custom pack builder. I've seen a few custom 4s 7500mah that are the same dimensions as the 6s's for under $70. If you like to solder you can order individual cells really cheap and can build some 4s 7000's for about $38 in materials per pack.

I run 4S and 6S in both the rampage and losi XXL. Both run hotter at 6S. More watts are being fed at 6S. Equals more heat. I leave the gearing the same. At 4S the temps are actually pretty low (like in the 130's) for both. At 6S the losi is in the 150's. The rampage in the mid 170's. I want to try a 9T pinion on the rampage to see if that will drop my temps. Or a larger gear. Right now I'm running stock gearing. Anybidy know where you can get a 9T 5mm pinion or a larger steel gear?

bigfol , did you ever try 10/45 with the neu 1527 ? 14/45 seems like it would make any motor burn a workout.

bigfol, what external BEC are you running. The only one I have found that can handle more than 6S is the Castle BEC Pro. It seems a bit over kill for 8S application. Also it is fairly large. I would like something smaller if it exists.

Do you have any links for the custom builders and bare cell suppliers you mentioned? Not sure if I am ready to try and build my own pack, but I want to explore it.

No I didn't try that combo, I really didn't want to lose the speed, I think if you can get your hands on one of the new NEU 1530 with a Y winding it might suit, I find that motors with D windings have a lot of power but with that comes a lot of heat...

I have put my 1527 back inside my boat, water cooling makes all the difference, after all they are designed for boats, so I'm told.....

I'm mostly running 6s these days(longer run time,10k mah). I'm using the smaller of the castle bec's, I had the larger one on it , but there was not a lot of room left once I fitted the CC cap bank, when I want run 8s I use the built in bec inside the xl2, but that is risky in IMO, It lasts a while but the ESC will go up in smoke at some point....... Have you thought of trying a small 6v Nimh battery pack, thats a pretty safe bet and it will fit right next to your rx box with some double sided tape....
