Looking at FG touring and Need some help identifying a model

I'm not greatly familiar with every FG model but I've been browsing used markets and I'm coming across a lot of models that are setup with what looks like a single shock on the front end. Is this some aftermarket modification or a type I'm not familiar with. I added a photo.

I've also seen some that are listed as 2wd but have the vertical engine placement like the 4wd models. If I'm looking for the classing setup with the near horizontal engine with the exhaust port almost to the chassis what am I looking for, or is the other style better?

I think the monoshock setup was used on some of the OLD sportsline cars in the mid-late 1990's, IIRC.

The engine orientation is "cylinder forward/air intake up" on Sportsline up to/including the "Sportsline '08" variant. After that, I think they switched to "Cylinder up/ air intake back" to match what they use on the 4wd variant. The current 2WD "Challenge" cars still use the "cylinder forward/air intake up" layout.

Clear as mud, right?
 
So as I understand it.....

Engine up = newest version
Engine forward = older version
Monoshock = oldest version

So I want one with the air filter on top and non monoshock. These are finicky enough, id think a vertical engine on a 2wd would be a little iffy.
 
Congrats! Post some pictures when you get your new toy!

I'd be curious to drive both engine configurations back to back...... on some level I 100% agree that the lower COG and better weight distribution of the older layout would be better..... but on the other hand, part of me wonders if it would even matter?
 
I want to bring this back up.

Can anyone tell me specifically what the difference between the sportsline and challenge line is besides the cylinder forward layout? It look like the challenge line is similar to the old fgs I used to own. Is that all it is?
 
I believe that is correct, yes. The "Sportsline" cars have been updated and revamped a number of times over the years, most recently (I believe) so the platform can be run in both 2wd and 4wd variations. The "Challenge Line" cars were a cheaper option to the current (at the time) Sportsline cars, but were essentially just the previous generation car. So if you bought a new "Challenge Line" car in 2022, you were basically getting a Sportsline car from 2004-2008.
 
I have a couple 4wd FG sportsline cars I picked up used but never run. Honestly not sure how old but no monoshock and air filter on top.
Really nice cars.
 
From what I understand from the replies here, if you’re specifically after the classic low, almost-horizontal engine layout, you’d want to look for the older 2WD Sportsline variants, rather than the later versions with the more upright engine.
The monoshock setup is interesting too. I’d definitely check the exact model/year before buying a used one, because the differences between the older and newer versions seem to go beyond just appearance.
I’m actually looking into FG and other RC models myself, and one thing I’ve noticed while checking options in India is that identifying the exact version is really important before buying, especially when it comes to finding compatible parts later. I’ve come across DreamyRC while looking at Indian RC options, although I’d still verify compatibility with the specific FG model before ordering anything.
If you’re still deciding between the two engine layouts, I’d be interested to hear what owners of both think after actually driving them back to back.

Yeah. The current challenge line is what I was looking for.
